I was yelled at twice for "refusing" to test kids with symptoms yesterday. I am not refusing and I don't think "your kid is not important" we simply do not have enough test kits to test people that aren't critically ill. Please remember it is not the doctor being a jerk it is a limitation of current resources.

Hang in there. We all know you are trying your best to provide healthcare to your community.

I wish we could provide some TA bouncers for you, on a volunteer basis. No rudeness to the staff will be tolerated or we will escort you folks out and you can go try yelling at someone else! We know you are stressed out as a parent, but imagine having to be in close contact with people all day long that could have this virus????

WTH is wrong with people these days?

I went to my doctor last friday. Had had a slight fever ( not to 100 ) for 6 days, slight cough, stuffed up. I had been to California in the window before that. He checked me out and said you probably have Covid but you are not High Risk ( 44 no health problems) and no severe symptoms so no test. They only could do 4 a day.

Today I don't have a " fever " checked at 98.4 but I would claim that is still 1 degree high for my real normal. But I feel much better.

None of my family has shown any symptoms. ( 8 year old and 10 year old and wife)

Anyway my only real reason for a test would be at this point to know I got over it and would give blood and tell them I got over it.

Hopefully the blood antibody test will be available in a few weeks and that is the test you will need
Glad you are and the fam are well

I have people yelling at me daily because they not get tested. Realistically the test is only for statistics unless you are seriously ill and will require hospitalization. So like was previously stated if you have the symptoms assume you are positive and go home to isolate yourself.

In the future you will be able to get a blood test for IgM and IgG and it will tell you if you have had it or not. Currently it is not really important because the treatment is the same just isolation and rest. As long as you do not get short of breath walking around your house you should be ok. If you are getting short of breath walking than you should consider going to the hospital.

Thank you all for your replies. He is just taking it day by day. Right now he feels ok but still sickly. He's gonna try to ride it out like his roommate did. I'm checking on him every couple of hours and will post any updates if I find out more.

What a damn mess. We are in complete damage control. It is such that we only care about COVID for the at risk populations or those who need hospitalization to stay alive. Since we aren't able to ID those infected, it makes me think herd immunity is the only outcome months from now after +60% have had the virus.

What this also tells me is all these "confirmed cases" statistics I check on worldometer everyday are a bunch of nonsense. It doesn't reflect the spread, it is only reflecting how many tests are going out. But we probably have always known that. Deaths are the only numbers we can rely on.

People really need to understand this. The test doesn't cure you, or really mean a damn thing since 30% of the time is a false positive. The treatment is the same... I guess you don't get the social media street cred without a positive test!?

Yeah but positive tests help people be responsible. What if you're in a position where you're still required to work? Supporting a critical industry or non-hospital healthcare... or with a spouse in that case? Truth is a lot of the cases maybe aren't covid19 but now you've got knock-on effects because you can't rule it out. What if you went to work yesterday?

We have to get this test situation fixed before the general lock down can ever be over.

The worldometer is a bunch of nonsense if you are using it to look at total number of cases. We likely have many millions in the US alone who have already been infected. But luckily the majority of these cases are mild or asymptomatic. No one knows the true number we just keep finding out it is probably way more then we realize each day. Also remember that we will have a blood test for IgG and IgM which will some day give us a greater picture of the true extent of this pandemic.

We absolutely need more tests - it is crazy that we've been so slow on the rollout.

That said, unless you are in a bad way, it likely isn't going to change the outcome - if positive - go home, isolate yourself and recover. If it is negative - go home, isolate yourself and recover.

I wish we had the tests for everyone cause I understand peace of mind is import, but I would also say that right now, for patients and doctors alike, going somewhere to get tested is probably far more dangerous than just assuming you have it.

In fact, if everyone just acted as if they and everyone they are around had it, it probably would be about the best thing for us all.

The public is making way too much out of the testing! The original test only had a sensitivity of around 65%. So even if you went and got tested and they said you were negative there was still a 35% chance you had the disease.

Thus we didn't start ordering millions of tests. Newer tests are getting better but the clinical index of suspicion is important because the tests are not 100% sentence or specific.

The antibody test will be far more important. For now as you said is you think you have the virus or a doctor tells you if thinks you do. Stay home treat yourself as if you are infected and later you will be able to know for sure.

Now if the hydroxychlorquinone zithromax combination proves to be effective in preventing severe disease like I believe it will then early detection will become very important if we have enough of these pills to treat people.

Also realize the tests are not being distributed evenly across the country, They are being sent out based on a prioritization with more tests going to NY and other major hotspots.

Americans are not use to rationed care where they can't get the tests they want today so being told "no" is a new experience for most.

that is not how false negatives are calculated.

Sensitivity (what is actually reported) is the % of positive cases that give positive results. Thus a sensitivity of 65% means 65% of infected samples will show a positive result, or 35% chance an infected individual is negative, With a nearly 90% rate of negative tests, we would expect about 5% of the samples as undetected positives. That is very different than 35% of the negative cases having the disease, which would be about 30% of the samples as undetected positives.

This so much. When I told my parents there was a real chance we had it in our house but with mild symptoms they panicked and said to go get tested. I asked why, because either way the treatment was to self isolate at home and rest and drink fluids.
Then a few days ago when my wife felt her breathing was bad enough she needed to be seen so I called ahead to the urgent care to make sure they were set up to handle COVID and they warned that she might not be able to get tested. I was taken aback and told them I didn't care about testing, if we were coming in it was because we thought we might need treatment. Honestly even my PCP panicked a bit and told me to go get tested when I called to just update them on my symptoms (still very mild at that point) It seems in this unnerving time we default to "let's do something" and testing is the only "something" that is available.

County hospital.
From a physician at a County hospital this is bad advice. We are probably less likely to test unless you are sick enough to be admitted or are in a high risk situation.
