I keep reading that the hospitals are overrun, it is a war zone, we are treating people in the hallways etc...

But then I see the stats that say Texas has 439 cases, are we really over running the hospitals with 439 cases?

Are all of the listed cases even in the hospitals?

My research says we have 84000 beds in Texas if we are at 90% capacity then that leaves 8400 beds.

Just curious.

I think that 439 is the number of cases confirmed by testing. Since we have such a testing shortage, we really have no idea of many people in hospitals who have the virus but have not been confirmed by testing.

A couple things:

1. I think you're overestimating our hospital capacity, in general.

2. Other ailments, illnesses, and injuries didn't stop occurring.

Hospitals are not overrun in Texas

That also assumes the cases are evenly spread where the hospitals are. What if all 500 cases are in El Paso (obviously not). They going to drive to Houston?

Zero cases in Lakeway hospital. And it's a big hospital.

Austin hospitals? Probably less than 10.

Nope. More right now from car wrecks. Or maybe even more from flu/pneumonia.

My aunt is a charge nurse for an Austin area hospital er and my mom is an x ray tech at a separate Central Texas hospital. Both said it's busier than normal but not more than they've seen before.

Hospitals in Texas were not estimated to be in trouble until late next week. Fingers crossed it doesnt happen, but the hospital issues will hit NY, WA and CA first, then us a week later.

I can see Hermann in Houston and Parkland in Dallas having issues. I doubt other places will.

Why do you doubt that?

Not saying you won't be right, but what #'s have you seen that lead you to believe we're not going to have hospital issues?

He's saying the wave of hospitalizations is coming. It's way too early to be confident that our hospitals won't get overun. It seems most hospitalizations occur ~10-14 days after infection. So if the virus just started rapidly spreading last week (see:exponential growth) we are still a week, week and a half out from really starting to see a wave of patients.

Some hospitals will. Some won't. Texas is a big state. And some areas have little to no cases.

Well yes, I think most know that every single hospital in the entire state won't be over-run.

Agree. And most know that some well. Unsure what the debate is on this one.

As of this morning there were 55 confirmed cases in Harris County. Dr friend guessed there were probably 10 in the hospital. 4.6 million people live in Harris County.

10 in all the Harris County hospitals combined?

How many ICU beds in all Harris County hospitals combined I wonder.

The OP was inquiring why he's hearing hospitals are over-run yet he doesn't see that in Texas.

Posters were explaining any hospital issues right now would/are concentrated in WA/NY/CA and wouldn't even be slated to hit Texas until late next week.

Ok so New York has 53000 beds according to a 2020 news article, again assuming they already had sick, pregnant etc... and the % I keep seeing is 90% current usage that leaves them with 5300 beds. They have 11,645 cases that looks like an issue, if everyone is in the hospital who has Covid.

So keeping on the topic anyone know what the rate of hospitalization is for infection? I think the numbers are very interesting, I am guessing 25% need hospital, and if so they would need a little over 3000 beds right now.

I think the concern for NYC is how fast it's spreading there. On Sunday they had 382 confirmed cases, now they almost have half of the cases in the United States. If they're just now putting in a lock down, and considering the population density and reliance on public transportation, can't you see a scenario where they have 100,000 confirmed cases a week from now, without even considering how many could come the week after or how many people have it but aren't bad enough to come in for a test.

Houston Methodist was apparently telling the media that 16 were being treated in their system, on or just before March 17.
