The problem is that we just don't know how many cases the US will see.
And the ranges are so broad.
In California, their governor expects 25,000,000 in his state alone in 7-8 weeks! If 1% die, that's 250,000 deaths. That's the worldwide total deaths for a year+ of swineflu.
I guess we will know for sure in 1-2 months either way.

This is just a hunch, and I have no data to back this up, but I feel like the fact that Texas is full of freeway cities and suburbs, we will be better off than the NE, or places like SF. For the most part, we aren't as packed in, so it's easier to socially distance.
Also, I think we should benefit from all of those private ERs that have been popping up over the last couple of years. They should be able to help with the non Covid cases, and leave the major covid to the big hospitals.

The wife of a guy I know is a nurse at Ben Taub and Memorial Hermann (so I assume in the med center).
He said all is good. There are a couple supposedly in one of the hospitals, but nobody really knows where.

I think that number was just thrown out to scare people. That would be half a million new cases per day. I don't think it helps when politicians throw out those numbers. All that will happen is when we end up with 5 million cases, someone will bring up the 25 million as proof it wasn't as bad as people said.

I have visibility to Austin area censuses and they were not heavily burdened as of Friday, if your frame of reference is average census this time of year and recent census before all this pandemic.

We are not overrun yet, but some of my colleagues have likened this to a game of Red Rover where the Texas Medical Community is banding together, linking arms and watching a Covid-19 rhino charging toward the line with everyone hoping it stumbles and falls before it gets to us.

Not saying you won't be right, but what #'s have you seen that lead you to believe we're not going to have hospital issues?
No numbers, but places that do not have huge inventories of apartments will not be affected as bad as the large urban areas. It's why NY is having so many issues.
There are major differences between the types of hospital beds. Typically, an ICU bed is needed for acute influenza like illness/pneumonia symptoms. Intensive Care Units are some of the most expensive per night charges/staffing/costs; think around $20K/night. They thus aren't 'overbuilt/staffed' by healthcare providers (counties or private, in Texas), to handle a trebling etc. of their average utilization.
For instance, NICU/newborn beds wouldn't be used for this. Some specialty hospitals, like heart hospitals, would be ill equipped to handle this, period.

Yes. My sister-in-law is a local ICU nurse. They are having to reuse masks 5 times.
In Brazoria County we have 385 hospital beds, and 35 are ICU beds (I think I'm remembering those numbers correctly). We have 14 confirmed cases. From what I can tell in the press releases, 12 are recovering at home and 2 are the hospital. I guess some of those could have progressed to needing hospitalization since they were confirmed. And I know there are many more awaiting test results or who haven't been tested.

Those places are the devil for non immediate life threatening emergencies based on what they charge. I would never go there unless I was about to die and couldn't make it to a regular er. Even if you are only there for thirty minutes you will get hit with a massive bill that insurance will either reject or will only pay a tiny percentage.

The popular local one here is famous for their drug cocktails. Just ask for one. My sister was offered Dilaudid and Ativan with no justifiable medical reason. Many of the freestanding ERs also choose not to backbill patients and will take whatever the insurance pays them. This helps them keep the volume up and they are making money hand-over-fist. Long story short, a lot of them are just glorified drug dealers and will be totally useless in this fight.

As of yesterday, 29 confirmed cases in Ft Bend Co. And all are recuperating at home. A man in his 70's was hospitalized but has since been sent home

Just saw that Ascension (Seton in Austin area and Providence in Waco), Baylor Scott & White, and St. David's are jointly moving to a no visitor policy that basically exempts most patients. It will lower the # of visitors to 1 per patient for anyone meeting exception criteria (which again is very broad).

Yep. Seen some sick people, at least one younger than me (as I get old, that's of course more common anyway).
Mostly I've seen normal CXR's on young people with cough and shortness of breath. Talking to a couple of ER docs it sounds like there are a lot of paranoid, healthy people coming to the ER, and putting themselves at risk.

Know a nurse that works at major hospital in Houston that said lack of PPE is a big problem. Wonder if we have the ability to manufacture any in the US or if it's all been offshored?Ogre09 said:JesusQuintana said:

That's not ideal. Thanks for the update.
Many more people coming in sicker today than previously with lower O2 sats and more shortness of breath her in McClennan county.
