Is anyone's company not allowing WFH?

No WFH here, and I am a computer programmer.

Boss is OLD school, and always hated WFH. Good news is that I won't be outsourced to India anytime soon. I also have a real office, with a wooden door and sheet rock walls. I just shut my door to isolate.

Hoping that this ends up bringing a revolution to the attitudes about WFH. I want to work from my sailboat!

I don't know how this would be at all possible to trace with how widespread it's getting, but I assume this has an impact on companies' decisions to allow employees to WFH:

OSHA - COVID-19 a recordable if contracted at workplace

And to play devil's advocate, scroll through social media and count how many people have posts referencing working from home and it's them on their couch with their dog, kids, etc.

Trust me, I get everyone works differently, but I could see how executives see this and are beyond frustrated to be paying employees to sit on their couch while the market is absolutely tanking.

Our company is not authorizing WFH "until the CDC actually requires it." I work in the IT department and our entire team can WFH but instead they have everyone in the office daily. We have a killer network that can handle the traffic with ease. The only way you can WFH is if you're already sick or have been exposed to a likely COVID case. Everyone else needs to come to the office until they eventually (and they all will) meet one of those two requirements.

This is such a stupid precedent to set. So any cold or virus that gets spread at work going to be next?

This seems like a case of leadership still not taking this seriously to me.

I agree that perhaps some executives should still be in the office (in their offices, which would likely keep walls between them and everyone else), but it is to EVERYONE's benefit - even the line workers that have to be there - to have those that can WFH do so.

This isn't about "fair", this is about protecting folks - and making an environment more dangerous for everyone, for the sake of appeasing folks who don't seem to be actually taking it seriously, seems like a bad idea.
I agree, and the executives do have offices, and my wife's team works in cubicles. She was able to take the remainder of this week off because it's spring break (we got two kids in grade school), but next week, it's business as usual. She just found out that someone else was sitting in her space this week. Bunch of BS.

Don't know about you, but I've never particularly looked at OSHA as a smart or forward thinking organization....

BTW, I agree with you. I have a suspicion this is more direction from WHO (or somewhere else) and won't really have any impact because, as I said, I really don't know how to you can prove you caught this at work. Even if someone in your office is sick, that doesn't mean you weren't in contact elsewhere.....

My company sent us home yesterday for 2 weeks. Told us to take whatever we needed to work remote. Not a huge deal for software engineers.
Lawyer. Got the WFH notice Monday night. Went into the office yesterday morning, grabbed my monitors, speakers, some reference books and docking deal for my surface, and now am basically working with the exact same set up as when I was in the office at probably 90% efficiency.

Only issue is I'm a designated signer, so I have to go in twice a week to execute docs with a notary.

I could WFH unless i need to do lab testing, which is one day a month if that. Everyone in my office is frustrated. We are in southeast Michigan, which has 60+ cases and with the asymptomatic 2-14 day window, I see that number jumping up quite a bit between now and next week.

Our whole firm is working from home right now. Exceptions have to be approved by regional leadership. I actually applied for an exception for me and a team member because we had something that could only be done in an office, but was told only 1 of us could get in. Most of my clients have shut us out of their offices for the time being, but most of what I do can be done remotely.

We have an office hoteling system, so there's no telling who was in your office yesterday. You're in a new office every day. No stuff in an office makes it really easy to sanitize each day, though.

Officer on my shift at the PD called in with a fever.

They told her since it was only 100.3 and not 100.4 or over, to come on in to work. So now she's on shift working with all of us.
Geez. We're all here in our cubicle area but told no contact with the public in the field. So why am I here again?

It's the most asinine thing I've seen in awhile. We had a trainee go home for 14 day isolation because his wife is sick after going to California. Well, first they told his FTO who had been with him in same car to "just come on in and watch yourself" then sent him home later that morning. So now he's home isolating, but we're telling someone with a fever to come on in because it isn't quite "100.4".

It's really pretty unbelievable

This isn't the case for me, but I could see some leadership argument in not asking your team members to do something you're not willing to do. Like in the case of manufacturing "ok, all you assembly line workers still have to show up each day as to not disrupt supply chains, but the management and office types, well we are all gonna work from home. K thanks bye."
Same problem in the construction industry. As a result, the construction industry companies I work with have thus far been stingy with WFH.

One thing I started yesterday was a video conf of all commercial and few of the engineers at the end of each work day, around 4, just to bs. Have to bring a beverage and it's open forum.....lots of personal talk, how are people coping etc and some brainstorming....work agenda is deemphasized. Not sure it will help but trying to create an office like forum where communication is open, information flows freely, and there is a sense of community and team.

What a beating. Don't be the bad boss who thinks he is a good boss. Mandatory, daily meetings at 4 just to "shoot the bull" seem like a total waste of time.
they have all given it a thumbs up so far and want to keep it.....i give them that option every time. so far, no one thinks its a waste of time, but I am sensitive to it.

Some of the comments there are ridiculous.
One guy at a car dealership saying there's no point in being there. Someone responds with a question about who would be buying a car in these times. Employee then responds back that actually 4 people came in.

Based on a call I just had with an employee, sounds like there needs to be some courses for HR. I work for a decent size company (400 employees) and this morning had to convince the head of HR that we should waive the dr note requirement for sick time on hourly employees to stay at home. Now I have an employee that just reported his wife had been exposed to someone showing symptoms. HRs response to him was monitor his symptoms and if he shows any to then stay at home. Luckily he called me and I told him to forget that and stay at home for two weeks.

You folks wanting WFH be careful what you wish for. We've been WFH since Monday, and with 3 kids and wife , dogs barking, landscaper, people ringing front door, etc., I could get nothing done (have to call customers). So, as I type this from my empty downtown office that I came to late this morning, I can tell you I had the most productive day this week. Plan to keep coming back.

Almost no traffic too!!

Sales, applications, and estimating were sent home at our office. Engineers, project managers, designers, and shop personnel are required to be in the office.

I just feel bad for my wife whose office was told to work from home but that they would be required to maintain the same level of efficiency they have in the office....and she has to do it while taking care of a 1 year old . She is pretty stressed

I'm on my 31st straight day of work working 12 hour days with 10 more days to go. We are not being sent home.

And on top of that, we just had a 5.7 mag earthquake a little over an hour ago that freaked everybody out! Followed by about 9 aftershocks...

Oh yeah, we had to evacuate to a muster site...so put us together with tons of other people to expose us to people who could have CV. Everything is going great! lol

Offshore drilling? That's what you get paid the big bucks for!! Don't worry, your time off the rig will be spent cooped up in your home watching tv and avoiding others.

Did they take her temp at the station? I think it might have moved up to 100.4 about an hour into my shift. She can't just take a sick day?
