The biggest non virus thing I've learned in the last month is how many news sites require subscriptions.

Probably referring to the modeling study that came out a few days ago, but not sure.

Here is a twitter link. I don't have a sub so I'm not sure why it showed up that way. May have very well been posted before.

Btw, Candice's summary isn't exactly what the article says.

Not what either piece said. Both suggested we need to prioritize getting data to confirm assumptions about spread / severity of the disease so that we can make good policy decisions. I don't think either group said they thought that the current assumptions were wrong - they just said that other assumptions (much wider spread of the disease) would also fit the case / death data that we have seen, and that our current approach wouldn't make as much sense under those facts.

Per Cuomo yesterday, New york had 172 new ICU admissions on the day. This is down from 374 the previous day.

I don't get the 5 and 13 minutes. If it says positive after 5 minutes then if you aren't positive after 6 minutes aren't you negative?

As fast as 5, and as fast as 13. Times vary, probably a bad metaphor, but imagine a home pregnancy test. If the blue line shows up (could be five minutes or could be ten), then you are pregnant. After a while (say 20 minutes), no blue line, not pregnant.

Think about it, it's searching for some sign of the virus. If.it finds the sign you have it, if not it has to finish it's search to be sure you aren't positive

Father had been sick since March 14 (fever). It had progressed long enough that his doctor finally tested him on March 21 (he fell into the higher risk demo). Test came back positive. Had a fever all week, but it finally broke about 3 days ago. Not out of the woods but very hopeful at this point.

Very good news for me at least

Tests like this are good: https://www.google.com/amp/s/abcnews.go.com/amp/Health/antibody-testing-colorado-town-provide-forward/story%3fid=69856623

While it won't prevent anyone from dying it may paint a better picture of what we are dealing with. If you care about your job and everyone's jobs and the economy a great deal, tests like this might lead to different types of quarantines and perhaps just those at risk. If you or someone you love is at risk, then I could see this being concerning - the opening up of more activity.

Regardless, it's a good test and just another step in one of the many angles from which this is being attacked. Testing and treatments progress!

A blip.

String together a week of the same and that would be a change in the curve.

I am seeing more and more analysis from statisticians on this exact data and they all seem to be showing the same results. Overall mortality rates are dramatically down in the US versus the past 5 years on average. I am betting a majority of the population did not understand the average mortality rate in the USA and the delta that CV-19 applied to that rate.

Discussion point:

While the conversation of CV-19 mortality rate is front and center and the entire US and world are hyper focused on battling this virus; are we engaged in a zero sum game scenario?

If this data is anywhere near accurate, why is it that hospitals were not in a critical situation previous or was it that the mortality was spread amongst different health departments that no single one was overwhelmed but in the case of CV-19, it alone would overwhelm any single hospital department with normal operations ongoing?

Lots to take away from this data and there could be a lag in CDC data even though they state it is 100% reporting, there could be modifications in future due to being overwhelmed.

Saving lives is definately important and this virus may have inadvertently saved more lives than have been lost on average in the same periods over the past few years for overall mortality, but damaged the economy during the same period.

These few months will be studied for years to come for sure.

EDIT: I will move the discussion point to new topic as this is only a positive news thread and I don't want to derail topic.
