Doc. I live in an active 55 complex, but most of the people who attend functions are over 65. After 7 months of no events, there was a meet and greet for the new manager the 13th. Most residents attended. Today we get a note on the door that Tarrant County Health has confirmed a covid case in the apt complex. I know the management can't tell us who it is, so no way to know if they were at the event or not. I was. There was food and adult beverages, and although I kept mask on except for food and drink and did not linger there, many were not putting the mask back on after eating. I am concerned this could be a spreader event if the ill person attended.

Long story I know, but should I start taking more than the normal amounts you suggest for Covid. I am taking everything you recommend once or twice as per your recommendation. But now that there is some chance I was exposed, is there more that I can do?

The letter suggested we talk to our doctor about this, and you are my doctor right now.

I am 72, overweight, female, and other than a bad hip, active and feel great. I am still teaching and wear a mask at all times there and stay six feet away. When I can't distance I wear a mask and a face shield.

Yes I would read my post recently about what to do if you are positive or exposed . It will tell you what to take but due to age and risk factors do as if you are positive

Hey Doc, what do you think of this study? I know its from the maker of the product but interesting.

https://investors.chromadex.com/news/news-details/2020/ChromaDex-Announces-Study-Results-Showing-Nutritional-Protocol-Including-Nicotinamide-Riboside-Plus-Standard-of-Care-Reduces-Recovery-Time-in-COVID-19-Patients-by-Nearly-30/default.aspx

Quote:

The Phase 2 study reported patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 experienced a 29% reduction in recovery time when receiving the standard of care in combination with a nutritional protocol including nicotinamide riboside (NR). The additional nutritional support was designed to promote healthy mitochondrial function and reduced average recovery time to 6.6 days in comparison to average placebo recovery time of 9.3 days. COVID-19 has been associated with metabolic conditions such as hypertension, high blood sugar, obesity, high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol, putting individuals with these conditions at greater risk for worse outcomes. The patients receiving the nutritional protocol consisting of nicotinamide riboside (NR), L-serine, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), and L-carnitine tartrate also experienced a significant improvement in liver function.
Quote:

In the open-label, randomized, placebo-controlled, Phase 2 study, 100 outpatient (ambulatory) patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 were randomly assigned on a 3:1 basis to receive hydroxychloroquine, which is the standard of care in Turkey, in combination with either a nutritional protocol (combined metabolic cofactors supplementation) or placebo twice per day beginning approximately 24-48 hours after diagnosis. Patients received the standard of care for five days and either the nutritional protocol or placebo for 14 days, with plasma samples collected on day 0 and day 14 to assess biomarkers. Key findings for the 93 patients completing the study include:
  • The combination treatment significantly reduced average recovery time compared with the placebo group (6.6 days vs 9.3 days, respectively, an improvement of just over 29%).
  • There was a significant reduction in plasma ALT, AST and LDH levels for the combination treatment on day 14 compared to day 0.
  • Adverse events were uncommon, benign, and self-limiting.

Quote:

"This is a positive and timely clinical trial with a powerful topline result showing accelerated recovery of Turkish COVID-19 patients treated with a nutrient protocol including 2 grams of daily NR," said Dr. Brenner. "The findings of this study are consistent with the results of previous preclinical research in which we've seen beneficial effects on circulating liver enzymes, anti-inflammatory effects, and boosted innate antiviral immune defenses."

Doc,

Thx for all you've been doing! What pulse oximeter reading is a cause for concern with covid? Probably already covered but couldn't find it.

I've had a pressure on chest slowly building off and on since Friday but nothing else really, very minor scratchy throat. If it continues tomorrow I'll get it checked out/tested but sitting at 95-97% oxygen sat but was curious on when to be concerned.

Thx!

At the height of things they were admitting people with 90 and under, so I'd imagine it's cause for concern once you hit the 92 or lower range. As always, if you're feeling ill enough it's better to go to your doc or the ER.

Typically under 92% consistently and you should consider getting evaluated in the emergency room.

Was informed last night that I was possibly exposed a week ago on Friday at a bar. A few other buddies there tested positive recently but not all. Went and got a rapid test and came back positive. All I have suffered was a scratchy throat and sinus issues the past couple days. Have been checking temp the past few days just out of precaution and I have not had any fever. No loss of taste or smell.

It's really difficult to accept the results of the test when everyone I know that has had it has lost taste and smell and had at least some fever. This feels just like super minor cold or just my usual bad allergies. I almost want to go get another test done.

Lots of people with little to no symptoms. I would still bet you have it with risk factors and cold symptoms.

Dr. Coates or those knowledgeable with his protocol -

I have a question about the supplements and kids/ youth. I've read some of the updates, but I don't have time to go through everything. Is this recommended for kids as well? My kids are phasing back to in person school (youngest started Monday) and we have some high risk family members so anything extra we can do is great. I haven't got everything for myself yet, but I'm taking 4 of the items and I always take Famotidine for my GERD. My kids range from ages 10-17, but their weights are all over the place. (74, 85, and 235lb) I have one child with aspergers and one with ADHD. Only the one with ADHD takes a prescription med. Would it be good / safe for them to use? Is there a dosage chart based on weight? Right now my youngest is just doing chewable vitamin C and I'm getting a multivitamin for each of them. I wasn't sure about anything else. Any insight appreciated.

Multivitamin for kids should be fine. They are extremely low risk for severe disease so taking a multivitamin to make sure they are not deficient in anything is really all you need to do.

Preface - I am assuming I have Covid. I tested negative 2 weeks ago, but i think it was too soon after exposure. I elected to not get tested again and become a statistic.

I first started having symptoms last Wednesday. mild headache, low grade fever for 2 days (only in the evenings). Flu like chills and aches for the first 2 days. Saturday I noticed I couldnt smell. Symptoms ceased sun/monday and I have been fine the rest of the week. I still dont have my smell back. All-in-all it was really mild, nothing more than a mild sinus infection or flu. I never had breathing issues or shortness of breath, and i have continued to work around the house and work out at the gym.

However, the worst thing has been the headache these last 2 days. Early on, they were so mild it didnt really bother me. But yesterday and today have been borderline migraine. And I have tried ibuprofen and tylenol, neither of which will cut it. Is there anything I can take OTC or even get prescribed for this headache?

I apologize if you addressed this already...thread is 86 pages long and i didnt read it in its entirety.

And stop going to the gym while experiencing covid symptoms. Mild for you doesn't necessarily mean mild for someone you might pass it to in public.

What advice, theoretically, might you give if I had a wife who has Autoimmune issues such as hashimotos who did have close contact with me after flying back from out of state yesterday before we found out I was positive? Would you think, theoretically, it might be a good idea for her to start a regimen of zinc or anything?

Sorry should have stated that I was 72 hour symptom and fever free before I went back to gym. Or does the headaches and loss of smell still count? I thought most people carried loss of taste and smell well past contagiousness?

Hashimoto's Disease is an autoimmune disease but the immune system is complex, and having autoimmune thyroid disease does not mean that a person is immunocompromised or will be unable to fight off a viral infection. Thus they should not likely be at high risk for severe disease with Covid-19.

I started having symptoms last Thursday. I have had mild symptoms up to this point. A couple nights I ran a fever and was short of breath Sunday night. My oxygen levels stayed around 95 or higher. The only symptoms I still have are the cough and loss of taste/smell.

I do have one question. I woke of Tuesday morning and had a dull pain on inner part of my right thigh. It doesn't hurt when I walk, it's just a dull pain I notice from time to time. Anything I need to be concerned with? I'm 37 and in good health. No other health conditions.

Rev, the problem with that is that many of us who are over 70 are still working members of society. We really can't lock ourselves totally away for a year or so. That is why social distancing and people wearing masks really help us survive. I know that view is not popular here. But to me it is reality. I wear my mask but it does not help as much as you wearing yours.

I am not saying shut down, but I don't get the total anti mask mentality or the people who simply don't care that they are putting me and others like me at risk.

We are so good as school right now. All wearing masks and enough families opting for at home that I can socially distance the kids away from my desk.

To me there has to be a middle ground. Not go out and live your life without thought for others.

I have not been in a store since March. I pay to have my groceries delivered, but these pay shoppers are not as good as seeing the shelves for myself. Oh to be able to buy groceries. I don't eat out. And for things like Mothers day or my birthday, the kids took me to patio type places. Winter will make that harder. I have bought gas three times since March. I just drive to school and back. But the elderly, and I HATE that term are at very high risk. People I know have survived but with a much reduced quality of life afterwards.

My poor dog has terribly long toenails. Basset nails are too tough for me to cut. The ONE time I took her to the groomer to have them ground down, the place was not enforcing masks or socially distancing so no more Petsmart. That was my only venture and while they were supposed to be at 25 percent. I have not been able to find a come to the house groomer who will do large dogs.

I have not been inside a church since March. I don't know how much more I can do on my part.

I know that this is long, the people who say it is EASY to isolate those over 70 picture us all living in some sort of assisted living place instead of in homes and apartments and still an active part of the workforce.
Wear the damn masks.

You state that as a fact. I know that is what we keep being told, but it probably isn't true. Take a look at the protocols in a COVID ward at the local hospital. How do they protect the healthcare workers from COVID patients? It isn't by making the patients wear masks.

Secondly, have you seen the "masks" some people wear, and the way they wear them?

Get some N95 masks and wear them when you are out. It will do a lot more to protect you.
