This picture is taken about 500 yards south of the apartments you referenced.

yikes. where was that taken?

a friend told me kingsland was flooded out between barker cypress and baker. i'm still trying to figure out for sure if the Vue Kingsland apartments there at the corner are flooding or not yet. i assume they are based on elevation and the current level.

So on the monster thread, someone speculated (or clarified, take your pick) that the confusion (re: release of floodwaters causing problems for areas above the dam) was because the water being released had nowhere else to go, and could work its way around the outside of the dam, and flood those areas. Does it look like this is what's happening? It would seem to hit the car dealerships and hotels along I-10 first, then make its way to Barker-Cypress, Baker, etc.

i don't see how that is possible.

the release point of the reservoir is by the bike park at 6 near memorial. it releases into a concrete channel directly into buffalo bayou. the little drainage ditch that circles around north of the dam is higher than the channel water is released into if i recall correctly.

It may be overflowing at the release point.

I tried to get to work this morning via I-10 to highway 6 south, etc. Yesterday I made it all the way to Alief, today no such luck. There were police blocking the road just north of where Buffalo Bayou crosses, and there was water on the road.

Now that I think about it, though, you're probably right. That Shell station there at the corner of Highway 6 and Memorial is built on pretty freaking high ground. Unless the water could go between that and the levee, it would never get around back like that.

More likely the water is simply backing up from inside the reservoir, which all along makes more sense.

That picture is from my balcony. We have never seen a drop of water in the reservoir behind our house until midnight last night. It rose at 1/2 foot per hour over night... slowed down to 1/5-1/10 foot per hour this afternoon.

This picture is at Kingsland and Baker looking east toward the apartments. If you zoom in, you can see that it was already flooded around 2pm. There is a major inflow into the reservoir near those apartments... it was backing up onto Kingsland.

We live directly across the reservoir from the gates at Hwy 6.

The reservoir is filling up faster than the gates can let out water. At 104 ft, it just starts pouring out the back and sides.

Don't think there is a problem at the discharge. It is just a controlled release that is slower than water filling into the reservoir.

nice. i see in your first post where your house is. looks like on the elevation map you are near the top height. the gage shows the level at 99.37 and it's held there for about an hour. unfortunately my level on the map is 96.1-97 but...maybe there is still a chance since it isn't up to your yard yet.

Where are you seeing the gage level? The sites I look at stopped updating at 5:45.

Got it. Thank yall.

Need it to stop right here.

I suspect it is spilling out somewhere at a very fast rate if it stopped rising.

You are referring to the controlled release gates. At each end of the dam are uncontrolled spillways.

If you look at google earth you can see concrete spillways declining in height at each end of the earthen dam. They are trying to release enough controllably to avoid significant uncontrolled release.

On the north side there is a big channel between the bike trail and the businesses along I-10 and Hwy 6 that funnels the water parallel to the dam all the way back to the Buffalo Bayou release point. Of course if it is uncontrolled it could exceed the capacity of the channel.

I've never been to the south end and can't really tell from google earth where that overflow water would go.

you're right, but the level hasn't gotten high enough to reach the spillway point yet. i was just saying that i didnt think it would be possible to flood backwards from the controlled point back towards 10.

oof. if it indeed got up to 104.4 that puts it right at the spillways or just over.

Does anyone know what the drainage ditch along the back side of Barker looks like? Is it already full, or does it appear to have capacity for overflow from the south side of the Barker Dam if it hits the emergency spillway?

My wife's Aunt lives in Forestview (southwest corner of Westheimer Rd and Addicks Clodine) by herself and normally uses the Metro for transportation due to her eyesight (no car).

Just trying to figure out what to expect for her since no family can get to her to help.

in one of jeff's tweets from earlier today there was a reply in the conversation that says in the press conference it was mentioned that they predict that Barker will begin uncontrolled release on friday sep 1st and would continue until following monday.

anyone confirm if that indeed was discussed?

Yes, but only about 200 cfs. Should have no real impact as expected to stay in drainage ditches

said in the press conference that they no longer expect barker to rise enough to flow out of the spillways.

current elevation is 101.4ft. projected to peak at 101.7.

Good news man. Hopefully this means less spillage upstream into cinco ranch.
