Even if the structural integrity of the dam was 100% sound, these dams holding water to the top was basically eliminate tons of homes to the west, no?

The map on news 2 has it as I've described. I have a picture from the news can I email to someone to post? How would I do it from iPhone?

You can upload using the imgur app and share the link here.

How the hell do you post from the imgur app? I cannot figure it out at all. That's why I used my Twatter to post that short vid earlier.

Just tweet the pic and post the tweet here. If using imgur you'll have to upload and then get the direct url. Twitter is prob easier.

Not sure exactly what you are asking. Looks like you got a word autocorrected.

If that 'was' is supposed to be a 'would', then yes, the homes to the west would get flooded.

My point is that I'm frustrated when I keep hearing they need to release water, before it gets near the top, to protect the damn from failing.

Maybe it's just me, but it just seems a damn should be able to hold water up to the top.

Now, I understand degradation over time, but if that's the case, gets some funds and start repairing.

HCFCD.org

Site appears overwhelmed right now.

Release points both near HWY 6 and I-10 and release into Buffalo Bayou. Releasing is intended to relieve areas to West without floodingnto east.

Maintenance is needed on 50 year old dams so they are trying to release at a slow rate before they release 20' at once. Balancing act with rain accumulating in Buffalo Bayou as we speak.

Live south of 99/Rayford in 500 year flood plain of Spring Creek. Anyone been in this area long enough to know if it'll flood? Drove back in Benders Landing and some houses were already close to having water in them.

I've been just a bit north of you for 3.5 years (Rayford). I was okay during last year's floods (Spring Creek actually rose in both April & May). This is expected to be worse (112' vs 108') so who knows. I'm nervous.

Keep checking here if you're not already:

When they built that damn, I don't think they anticipated that the Katy rice fields would be concreted over.

So 290 inbound, then Huffmeister, then to hwy 6 south. Do you know which road they turned West on to head towards Barker?

This could be a HUGE help

It's a balancing act. They have to release some water so as not to flood the subdivisions on the backside of the reservoir, but also have to limit the amount released in conjunction with ongoing rain to be sure to not flood neighborhoods and downtown downstream.

Yeah that was supposed to say "would."

Very delicate process indeed. Dams are in bad shape across the country. lake Lewisville dam is also in a bad spot too

The whole confusion about the releases is from the Channel 2 anchors not understanding.

What Jeff Lindner was trying to say is that there are going to be slow releases from both dams in to already flooded Buffalo Bayou. What they are doing the intermittent releases for is to protect the integrity of the dam. What Jeff Lindner was trying to get across is that the back up on the back side of the dam going into Cinco Ranch for Barker and like Clay road / Barker Cypress for Ad***** is that those are going to back up into houses and they are going to be in the houses for 1-3 months before they can drain the reservoirs. It is the nightmare. I never thought we would see enough rain to fill them up in one storm. I always was worried about two consecutive storms where they couldn't drain them.

And Jeff said that it will be in their homes tomorrow.

Buffalo Bayou originates on the Katy prarie. It is the major carrier of flood waters from Katy to the ship channel and into Galveston Bay.

The Barker Reservoir dam is a horseshoe that starts just south of I10 at Barker Cypress, runs (East) parallel to I10 to Hwy 6, from Hwy 6 to Westheimer, then back West ending near Westheimer and 99.

The release gates are about a mile south of 10 on hwy 6. The amount of water coming into to the reservoir far exceeds what they can let out through the gates. The water is filling the horseshoe and is going to eventually start spilling out of the low spot which is around Fry at Westheimer (affecting Cinco and other nearby areas).

What a terrible situation. They may have to take a real hard look at taking parts of Katy and increase the size of the reservoir.

So the reporter on 2 is saying the folks behind the dam are ready for the gates to open because their homes are already flooding.

Soon to be sister-in-law, her husband, and two little boys just left their house tonight located in the Grand Lakes (Phase 3) subdivision. The house backs up to the woods and levee on the north side of the Westpark Tollway between Peek and Mason. They're expecting to lose everything.

From what I could tell, the release of the reservoirs has way more to do with relieving pressure on the dam and way less to do with preventing flooding in Katy.

Exactly. The don't care about what is behind the dams. They have to protect downtown and the ship channel. This is what these dams were built for. The definitely can't let them over top. Then giant swaths of West Houston would be wiped away and thousands of people would die.
