Yes, the Memorial Day Flood had more localized rain in a 24 hour period (see image below) than we might get during Harvey, but Harvey will saturate everything within hundreds of miles. There is nowhere for 20 inches of rain over hundreds of miles to go.

i thought about that too. the watersheds upstream are probably going to get quite a beating, but they may not be able to release much water. i'm sure lake ad***** will be around for a month or so.
The main reason those are listed as urgent is because of the consequence of failure. They aren't as bad as the news makes them out to be. But, if they do fail, they each roughly the size of Lake Houston and will do unprecedented damage downstream. Most dams aren't in the middle of the 4th largest city in america.

This is a very reckless attitude. If anyone here is new to Houston, talk to your neighbors to see what the flooding history of your neighborhood and surrounding areas is -- especially if you are near one of the major bayous. The problem with Houston is that when the bayous overflow their banks, it is unreal how fast the surrounding neighborhood streets fill up with water. I have seen streets flood in 5 minutes. By the time you realize it could be a problem, it is too late to leave.claym711 said:

not much. The day WILL come when they fail. Its not an IF but a WHEN. The property damage on the other side of I-10 will be beyond catastrophic . Officials have been shouting the warning for years but it just isn't being listened to. Could this be the event ?? fyi for flood insurance holders. Wright will reimburse up to $1000 for sand bags and $1000 for moving belongings to protect against flood damage. Federal minimum wage rates.Quote:

Latest fcst we get at work from service shows going back into Gulf on Tuesday and hitting just east of Galveston on Wednesday at 70mph (up to 25 mph higher). Had shown Port Arthur on earlier fcst.

Got a friend who is part of FEMA's National IMAT (Incident Management Assessment Team) in Washington. They have been put on stand-by for development to SE Texas to assist the regional IMATs.
