Leafed thru the book and as always discovered something I didn't know. There is a section from the 1920s until the League disbanded with each years All SWC Team. And found no Roger the Rocket Clemens. Sure would have guessed he made the team in one of his years at Texas.

Yeah, you would think. He only played a couple years there (went to San Jaq first) and he had both Schiraldi & Swindell to compete aginst from his own staff.

I found it really interesting that Swindell was committed to Houston until the last minute. Would have been interesting to see how things would have turned out had he honored his commitment

I don't think Swindell and Clemens were on the same team at Tx. Schiraldi and Roger played together on the '82 and '83 teams. Swindell lettered in '84 '85 & '86.

Clemens wasn't terrible by any means at UT, but he was no better than the 3rd best pitcher on the squad. He pitched a huge game in the CWS that highlighted his legend at Texas, but the others on that staff had far better complete careers at Texas.

Oh...and I just ordered the book off of Amazon. Thanks for the link. It should be here in 4-6 weeks.

I typed in SWC instead of Southwest Conference. I guess that's why I couldn't find a match.

oh, that could very well be....I'm glad you found one. I found it by searching Neal Farmer's name.

Back to our quasi-bottom feeder conversation, apparently, Arkansas was really bad for a really long time as was SMU (for pretty much the entire existance of the program).

quote:
"They got rid of baseball and golf at the same time," said former SMU sports information director Bob Condron, "and there was a huge outcry for gold."

SMU's stadium backed up to a swimming pool

quote:
"....the top two rows of Armstrong Stadium were always filled--with boys watching the pool," Condron said. "They didn't see a pitch. In fact, some were hit by foul balls because they never saw it coming. But that jacked up attendance by 40 percent."

Greg Swindell was one of the greatest pitchers of all-time in college baseball. It didn't quite work out that way in the majors though.

The Razorback program got going once Kevin McReyonlds showed up on campus.

SMU had a few decent teams in the late '40s....one of their ALL SWC players was Doak Walker...while his Highland Park HS pal Bobby Layne was an ALL SWC pitcher at Tx for 3 years. Both certainly better known for football.

Rocket was the number three starter on the 83 championship team but started the game that won the CWS, Schiraldi was the ace of that staff. Swindell came in the next year and pitched in two straight CWS' with a chance to win an NC at Texas as the Horns finished second in 84 and again in 85. His pro career was not as good but he did start in a world series and got a ring, I think with the Diamondbacks. I seem to remember a WS game where he and Rocket both started and thinking how cool it was to have two former Longhorns facing each other in the WS.

The best part of winning that last game against Tech was scoring all those runs in the bottom of the ninth without a base hit.

FWH...Clemens, Spike Owen and Schiraldi were all on the Boston Red Sox 1986 World Series team. They are pictured at the series with Gustafson and Bill Bethea in the aforementioned book.
