28 years of history on the line this weekend

Since Olsen Field opened in 1978, Texas Tech has never won a weekend series vs. the Ags at Olsen. The streak will be on the line again starting Friday night.

In the past 28 years, there have been 2 series of note that threatened the streak.

Prior to 1995, Olsen Field was truly a black hole for raider baseball, but in 1995 it took a dramatic extra-inning grand slam by the maroon-n-white (Jeff Bailey) to split the 4 games series with Tech and keep the streak alive. (Tech had won a doubleheader the day before)

Then in 2000, after dropping the opener to Tech, the Ags got a 9th inning single (from Carlos Sepulveda) to edge Tech 2-1 in the second game, and then the Ags run-ruled Tech in the series finale. That series was the highlight of the Ags' lowly 2000 season as Tech ended up making a regional that year.

----
Recently, the Ags swept Tech in 2002 at Olsen and then comfortably won 2 of 3 in 2004.
----

It may be another classic series vs. the Red Raiders this weekend. Gig'em!

if i remember correctly, game 3 of the '04 series was not pretty for us at all. that was the one game i was able to go to for that series...and it sucked. at least we won the series.

I haven't looked at this in a while, but if I recall correctly, from 1975 to 1995, Tech went 20 yearss without winning so much as a game in College Station. Really need 2 out of 3 this weekend, and if we could somehow get lucky and win three, that would all but make up for last weekend.

You can't find the info on the A&M or tech web site and I don't have a media guide at work to reference, but aside from the 20-year drought tech had at Olsen, I believe we also held an overall 27-ish game winning streak over tech in that time frame as well.

That doesn't sound like much, but when you play 3 time a season (tech rarely, if ever, qualified for the SWC tournament), that's 9 years between wins in baseball.

For those of you that can't remember back that far, tech and Rice were constantly the SWC doormats before Coaches Hays and Graham arrived. You know how bad Aggie basketball was before Gillispie got here? Rice and tech baseball was worse. I am not kidding.

Back in the '60s, '70s and '80s, the only teams that even had a prayer of winning the SWC were UT, A&M, Arkansas and Baylor. When UH joined the conference, they were good...but not great. TCU was generally solid, but not consistent. SMU dropped baseball in '80, but they were a non-factor as well. Rice and tech had some of the worst facilities in the nation (at least Rice has upgraded).

Although tech has still never qualified for the CWS, it is amazing how Hays has turned that program around. Seriously...words can not describe how awful the tech program was before his arrival.

Luke: I think that streak ended at 25 in 1991. During that same timeframe, we won something like 17 in a row against some pretty decent Baylor teams, too.

oh boy, just returned from Olsen...and this may be the weekend Tech finally gets it done in College Station.

The Ags hitting was actually fairly decent tonight as the Ags had some triples, doubles, and 2-out RBI.

The first problem was the starting pitching. Two Fridays in-a-row now Nicholson has been hit hard in big 12 play. It's time to move Creps to Friday night.

The base running mistake in the 1st inning by Hale was bad. Did not show good baseball I.Q. in that situation.

In the field Parker had a game to forget. Numerous "plays not made" on ground balls. Plus 2 errors.

Fortunately in baseball, momentum is only as good as the next days starting pitcher. Creps needs to have a big game.

Suddenly the Ags season record is just 15-10. A winning season is not looking good with an 0-4 conference start. Conference play will just get tougher on the road.

all right, much better tonight! Creps turned the momentum in the Ags favor, and evened up the series.

And now 28 years of history will be weighing, perhaps heavily, on the Techsters shoulders tomorrow.

From Tech's athletics web site. They seem to be taking the streak back even beyond the 28 years.

The loss robbed the Red Raiders of their first series win at Olsen Field since the 1973 season.

I think the Tech SID office doesn't realize that 1973 was pre-Olsen Field. The Red Raiders are still O-fer series-wise at Olsen.

Luke -

Tech and Rice may not have been great, but I seem to remember Rice being in & out of the Top 20 (before the current Top 25 listing) in the late 70s/early 80s. I received an offer to play BB at Rice from David Hall in the summer of 80 and followed them pretty closely. To this day, I get kidded by my wife (also TAMU '85) and family about there being an Aggie Joke somewhere in paying to attend A&M versus going to Rice on a Scholarship. I did not go to any websites or almanacs, but remember them as being better than a doormat.

I can actually step in with some facts here as I am reading SWC Baseball's Greatest Hits and just finished the section on Rice last week. It's a great book and I recommend it to any SWC baseball fan.

From 1975 til the end of the SWC (1994) Rice finished in the Top 3 twice ('84, & '94), the Bottom 3 13 times (including 8 last place finishes), and somewhere inbetween 5 other times.

I hate to say this but from '77-'83 they finished 8/9, 9/9, 9/9, 6/9, 4/8, 7/8, & 5/8. In '81 & '83 they finished with a winning record in conference play and in '81, '82, & '83 they finished with overall winning records. They did have Matt Williams (P) & Dave Englund (P) on those early-80s teams.

I wouldn't call them doormats in the early-80s but looking at the big picture from '75 til the end I think it's a statement that holds water.

I love baseball history....but of course we all know, thanks to ag711, that I'm a "dork"

AgRyan -

Thanks for the documented information. However, my statement hold true, then. You said in 81 & 83, they finished conference with a winning record and in the Top 3 in conference in 84. So, 3 of the 4 years I might have played and closely followed them, they were very far from doormats in a pretty decent SWC.

Oh, by the way, the week after I declined the offer in '80, Rice signed another LHP from Bellaire HS named Jon Ofield, I believe. I think his dad was a Principal at Waltrip HS in Houston?? Never heard much from him, or about him. Maybe you could enlighten me on his career college stats, if you can easily find them. Just curious!!!!

JAD AG85, you're absolutely correct. Their best seasons were those that you were following which would make sense.

As for Ofield, there was no mention of him in the book nor was I able to find anything on him using basic search engines....sorry.

Neal Farmers book on the SWC baseball is not only great...there is nothing else like it. He did a lot of research in putting it together. I don't know Mr Farmer but have met him several times..he has a gillion stories about the SWC. Since his days at the Houston Post he became the top guy of the Houston Touchdown Club.
