More detail on Broyles denial of permission in this aticle.

quote:
"It's a great job ... Somebody's going to enjoy it," Van Horn said. "I've got a great job here."

Apparently, Byrne or another Texas A&M representative had already been in contact with Van Horn before gaining permission.

"I talked to Dave and he said he wasn't interested. He was happy," said Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles. "Somebody, I don't know who it was, had already contacted him several times while we were still playing. But since he told me he was happy and not interested, I decided not to even give them permission to talk. There was no reason to."

Can't argue with that.

I'm probably wrong, but what's coming out of Broyles' mouth in that article sounds stinky-fishy.

Whatever the case, I know Byrne will get the best coach available.

That's perfectly allright with me. After watching Bianco's Ole Miss club take Van Horn's club to the woodshed a few weeks ago, I was much more impressed with Bianco, whom I still favor for the job if Tanner and Hall don't pan out!

I would not want Bianco simply because as soon as the LSU job opens up, he will be gone.

That's also what Urban Meyer said about Utah. I'm not following the coaching pursuits very closely, but there are things to simply keep in mind.

And why would I feel that way?

Excerpt from Aggie Sports Article on Home page.

"Hall, who has two years left on his contract, has had talks about an extension, Braine said.

The 47-year-old Tanner is in his ninth season at South Carolina (413-175). The Gamecocks have made three straight trips to the CWS, including a runner-up effort in 2002.

The State reported that Byrne will offer a package of about $500,000 per year. Tanner’s package is in the $300,000 range."

LSU will have to pay a pretty penny to get him back to Baton Rouge.

It is going to be an interesting matchup between Bianco's Ole Miss team and the horns. I hope we don't have Senior Citizen shuffleboard on the tube instead.

My understanding when Van Horn left Nebraska was that he was "going home" to Arkansas. It is not a suprise at all that he would reject any contract talks.

I'm constantly amazed about how a location like Arkansas (or Nebraska) can even begin to draw enough baseball talent to compete against other SEC or Big 12 teams.

I hate to always sound sceptical of these teams recruiting methods, but in our society, when nothing else makes sense, follow the money.

Someone familiar with Ark. know where their present roster is from? Mostly Arkansas? JC's?

sounds like some tampering going on behind the scenes.

Here's their roster/hometowns:

Lots of Ark, OK, and TX. Pretty spread out though.

Arks recruiting coordinator works his butt off, he is from the texas gulf coast(Houston/Galveston area) played college ball in the Dallas area, was head coach at Texarkana community college, has been with Van Horn for 5 years,he has ties in tex, ark, la, okla. Travels to all the college show case games. One morning he's on the east coast, and by the afternoon he's on the west coast. No underhanded stuff needed, just hard work.
You bring a kid in for a visit and show them Baum stadium and the baseball facilities that Ark has, its a real plus.

http://www.hogwired.com/tableroster.asp?Home_ID=4 They get anybody worth having in Arkansas, have a good presence in NE Oklahoma, southern Missouri, and Memphis, then piece it together from there. For folks that have never been to northwest Arkansas, it is really a pretty nice area--much better than the other 90% of the state.

LSU job opening up? Are they gonna get rid of Smoke?

txag72, before insinuating that these schools are cheaters, why not take the time to even look at their roster. Offhand, these starters for UNL are from the state of Nebraska:

Gordon 3b
Wehrle 2B
Christy C
Bruce CF
Gerch RF

Pitchers:
Kroenke
Chamberlain
Dorn
Duensing
Timm

Add in a number of players from Iowa, the Dakotas, and Colorado where there is little D1 baseball presence and you have a pretty rich talent pool for one university to recruit from.

They do play basbeball up here and they do have some talent.

"I hate to always sound sceptical of these teams recruiting methods, but in our society, when nothing else makes sense, follow the money."

Or, when two "lesser" programs with the same dynamic head coach blow by the Aggies like a goat tied to a fencepost, accuse them of cheating.

Bull Butter: If Skip Bertman wasn't AD, I would imagine that Smoke would really be on the hot seat, but I just can't see Bertman making a change this year, and frankly, I'd be surprised if a change was made in a year in which they made the NCAA tournament, at least as long as Skip is AD.

If Broyles is so confident that Van Horn would not leave why would he deny permission? Why wouldn’t he just say “Sure, Bill you can talk to him. I will let Dave tell you no himself.”

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Primarily because Broyles is an *******. Other than that, I don't know why he would not say as much.
Houstonag

Broyles is an arrogant ***. He and Royal were two of a kind. They both used their positions to take advantage of schools with lower enrollment. Arkansas also has a special academic plan for those athletes who need help. Much more generous than the sips.

I agree that Broyle has been, is and will continue to be a certified jerk.

But ... there is a REAL chance that VanHorn didn't have any interest. Just a thought.

If Van Horn has no interest why would Byrne go to the trouble of attempting to contact him “officially” after he had already contacted him “unofficially?”

Obviously Van Horn must have shown some interest when they spoke “unofficially” or Byrne would not have bothered to call Broyles and attempt to make it official.
twk
How long do you want to ignore this user?
TGCGT: Probably because his "unofficial contact" was very indirect. Most likely through the current Nebraska staff. I take it that whatever feedback he got from Anderson and/or Childress wasn't enough for him to let it go without going through official channels to confirm Van Horn's position.
