It should overall help our offense as our hitters generally have a good feel for the strike zone. Hopefully it helps improve college umps through better training.

Could be a huge step in the right direction in that it would allow an avenue to overturn clearly poor calls but IMO it needs to be better than what we saw in Hoover in May or it will be just create a new set of problems. I thought buffer used the the SEC Tournament was too large.

Agree. It's either the strike zone or it's not. One thing I could see is if there is some give around the normal zone, maybe 1/2" either way in and out, where the call just stands.

"For some reason, the ABS system is malfunctioning… therefore Texas gets the call" - their home games all of a sudden

I felt like the zone at Hoover was just about perfect. If you move to the MLB strike zone then you'll have 20+ walks a game and it'll be a terrible product.

During the SEC tournament, I feel our hitters could have challenged several more calls, but had to be conservative due to limits. The number of challenges should be tinkered with.

Did I say it had to be the MLB zone? IMO, whether the buffer was too large or system was not properly calibrated it just seemed off to me at times and I don't think this was due to watching MLB since I do not watch much of the pro game until the college season is over mostly following through box scores and game recap highlights

I'd be behind shrinking the buffer zone a little but what ABS really needs is 2 zones, one at the front and one at the back of the plate.

It was essentially 1 ball bigger than the MLB zone.

The real issue is that the zone hasn't been called to the rule standard for decades. Balls that many of us would consider WAY high if we watch baseball are, and have been, strikes according to the rule book since the beginning of time.

Agreed. I see no reason they can't implement a 3D zone.

Regardless of what the actual zone ends up being, in my opinion, getting it called consistantly is the most important part

Gonna be interesting to see how many guys listed at 6'4" are really 6'2" or 6'0" becomes 5'10" like in MLB when they measured guys.

I don't mind the pickoff limit. ... Not quite sure how I feel about the 3 batter minimum. Less Schlossgobbler walking back and forth to the mound is a positive. A guy that comes in and just doesn't have it that day... That's bases loaded before you can make the change. That happens quite a lot in college and it'll be painful.

I love this. The pitching changes every batter drive me crazy. MLB moved to this and it's been so nice

I don't understand why this is SEC only. Seems weird that a single conference is just going to play by their own set of rules…

Great! More accurate pitch calls are better results than before.

More determinism and better accountability perhaps. But the methodology is a little strange since it really only in Hoover used a single check plane "slice" of the mid-plate and doesn't inspect the entire volume of the plate like we imagined it could. Doing that resulted in too many strikes compared to the umpires calls. That implies umpires are not calling strikes that are strikes and introducing subjectivity.

Agreed. Don't like any of this. I don't care how long the game takes. Too much tinkering with rules for my taste.

Let the college coaches make that change for a single batter and have it backfire in their face!

Gosh we don't have to do everything MLB does sheesh.

It was only a matter of time that all the new changes and rules they've added to the majors of the last few year would trickle down to the college level. I prefer the 3 batter min., the changing pitchers after every batter gets real old, 3 batters is enough to know if the pitcher has it or not that day. Georgia and t.u. are the worst about it.

As well for the comment about why only the SEC, the last few changes made (like the green bag) they used the SEC as a test bed to see how it goes then mass implement the new change every where else.

Now it's impacting game strategy, especially with limiting pick off attempts. Once you throw two pickoffs stealing becomes incredibly easier

College pitchers discovered that unlimited pick off attempts were a work around to the pitch clock. Not ready to throw a pitch? Just lob a pick off throw to first (or second, as applicable). How many times did you see pitchers make "pick off attempts" with guys taking a six inch lead and no prospect of stealing a base last year? It was happening a lot.

What has been (or has it been) determined about the shift? Was that going to be disallowed?

How do you disallow it? It's like saying outfielder's aren't allowed to play deep or shallow depending on the hitter. There is no exact spot where you have to play your position

There are rules in the MLB. You have to be on the correct side of 2nd and you can't be in the outfield grass as an infielder. Pretty easy to enforce.

I don't watch MLB much so didn't realize that. Not sure how I feel about that though even though I hated every time when did the shift. I guess if they do enforce that I won't care, but still odd that players can't back up into the grass if they want to just like if they want to play on the infield grass. I definitely support the playing on the correct side of second base though

It also shrinks the strike zone quite a bit. An ABS zone is a different zone than a plate zone. Balls that were correctly called strikes this year will be balls next year.

I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.
