Imagine if we had just not scheduled the PVA&M game in the first place, or canceled like many other programs did. Our RPI would be in the 7-8 range, and with our other metrics (ELO,DSR,Conference standings) there would likely be considered a lock for a top 8 seed.

Whoever scheduled that game and continues to schedule it year after year should feel bad.

What metrics does the committee use? Whichever one backs up,what they were already inclined to do.

I think we are in good shape. If they leave us out of the top 8, they are going to have to do a lot of mental gymnastics. Still, led like to win one in Hoove just to make sure.

I personally don't think we could go lower than nine, and if we do fall to 9, I think it would be unlikely to be at the expense of another SEC team that we finished ahead of in the standings, or even beat straight up. More likely it would be someone from another conference, in which case we'd just go to their place and win a road super, which could be fun.

Well said. If it were purely formulaic based on metrics, we'd all know already and you wouldn't need a committee.

Or host UK or one of the other SEC 2 seeds a few Non-SEC hosted regional will have SEC teams on the two line

One key metric should be, "do you play on natural grass?". ...case in point.

I like that! No post season games on fake fields!

Takes out the sips!

BTHO the SEC tourney!

The sips would install real grass so fast if this were a rule!

One of the '14 or '15 should have been in Omaha but didn't then a weaker team made it in '17. Yes, BAS for some

I'm sure you mean '15 and '16.

I thought we were winning it all in 2016. That was our year. I still believe we would have if we hadn't been paired with TCU again.

Remember that was the game when we discovered that Hunter Bond could come out of the bullpen and throw strikes on a night when no one else could, so that game did have a silver lining.

Playing Tenn Tech, Penn and Oakland at the start of the season is more of a problem. Hopefully we do better at scheduling non conference series next year.

So, we weren't better than TCU but we were going to win it all?

Boy, that some mental gymnastics there.......

No... I think we could have beaten TCU if we met in Omaha, for instance, or if we hadn't played and lost to them in supers in 2015. I think that particular situation, after what had happened the year previous, worked against us.

I wonder did any of the teams that we are competing against for a top 8 cancel a game for RPI purposes?

In the NerdCast that projects the Field of 64 they said the softball committee seemed to lineup really closely to DSR.

Joe Healy made a good comment on the D1 podcast the other day...

10 to 15 years ago, USC (RPI #8) would be a lock for hosting and a top 8 seed because of their RPI. The committee did not use other metrics or dig deeply into other data back then.

which makes one wonder...all those seasons where Rice basically got an automatic national seed every year...

how many Q1 games or wins did the Owls actually have in those seasons? especially the WAC and MWC years

probably only played 8 to 10 Q1 games across February and the midweeks

Why does D1 have us ranked 10 if we are a top 8 lock? And our DSR is 7.

They talk about this specifically on the Nerdcast. The TL;DW summary for you -- polls are challenging because it's difficult to drop teams when they keep winning. They mention both USM and OSU in this regard. They won and while other teams ahead of them lost.

Rankings such as their DSR and NCAA RPI are attempts to try to account for quality of wins, SOS, etc...

D1 means exactly nothing to the committee. Sorry Kendall but it's true. RPI does. ELO and ISR does. The whims of the committee defintely do.

Warren Nolan - Texas A&M Team Sheet has our RPI at 11 and ELO at 7. A great record against Q2-3 teams helps. All the Q4 teams doesn't help, even being undefeated. A losing record against Q1 teams doesn't. That home loss to Vandy hurts, and the recent record does as well.

Boyd's World has us at an RPI of 11 and an ISR of 7.

It feels like we're battling for 8. If I had to guess we need to win at least 1 in Hoover to secure a top 8. Southern Miss stubbing their toes would help too.

If you listen to the nerd cast, we are 8 almost by default since Southern MIss is in the Sunbelt Conference and they never get a top 8 bid. Essentially they have us at either 8 or 9 and the conference tournaments could make them flip.

We take a first game exit in Hoover and that's all the reason the committee will need.
