But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

How can you be athletic and strong enough to do that to a baseball… then your ankle collapses like that from a celebration… truly bizarre. I feel bad for that guy

Fake fields should be outlawed.

I sure don't want to minimize what happened to that kid, it was horrific. But the video said that a pinch runner was allowed to come in and finish the jog around the bases? Is that really allowed?

Edited to state the the outkick article, not the video, said a pinch runner was used.

Exactly. As much money as is poured into these sports, there's no TRUE excuse for using artificial turf

Yes, yes that is allowed. Ball has to be dead (for example, home run). Can substitute run for the batter/runner or other runner that was hurt.

A few doctors said pathologic fracture. The broken bone was caused by an underlying disease that weakened the bone structure, rather than significant trauma. Common causes include cancer (metastatic disease), osteoporosis, infections, or benign tumors. In other words, had nothing to do with artificial turf field. Will be interesting to read the followup.

Almost all collegiate baseball programs lose money.

Yes, but beaucoup dollars are still spent on the programs, regardless. Budget isn't a valid excuse.

I believe this is a professional field in Puerto Rico.

Injuries are part of the game. They occur on natural fields and artificial fields.
People on here dog on artificial fields becasue we dont have one, If BBP was a turf field nobody here would have a problem with them. FACT.
That injury was not because of the turf field. Freak accidents like that occur in all sports on all surfaces.

I'll agree that it's not fair to assume the injury was caused by artificial turf. But your FACT that we wouldn't complain about BBP if it had artificial turf isn't supported by my memory of what people were saying about Kyle Field's turf before it went back to grass.

Looks like they were playing Puerto Rico? Didn't know ow that was a thing for college baseball to play in those destinations to start the season.

I won't condemn the kid for dancing on his way to second base, it's what young people do. But I'll bet he spends the rest of his life wishing that he had followed the example of Ohtani while going around the bases after hitting one out.

Injuries occur on both surfaces, true. They occur more often on artificial surfaces.

If Olsen moved to fake grass I would cry. I'm still bitter about the artificial surface behind home plate. A lot of Aggies would have a problem with it, I assure you. Not only are natural surfaces better and better-looking, we are an Ag school and we take pride in our fields and field crew.

Right.

I can't stand the fact that we have some fake turf around the home plate circle.

It's been scientifically proven that artificial turf leads to higher rates of knee/ankle injuries, especially when cleats are worn. The turf grabs onto cleats unlike either dirt or grass, and that's exactly what happened here.

I think this is only the 2nd or 3rd year they've hosted a tourney in PR.
