this is a great hire. he did a fantastic job accross the board at DBU so on coaching alone it's a great hire. to bring home a former player to help turn things around even better. win win

great hire

Honestly, this is a great hire considering our circumstances. He is probably more ready to be a HC than Earley and gives the staff some more maturity. I have a feeling he is doing his alma mater a solid because I was under impression he was going to be HC soon.

I think he's likely to move into a "hands off" recruiting role

I was hoping for the possibility of Penny retuning to Olsen when Coach Fox was let go. Love this news!

Longley is going to stay on as Recruiting Coordinator. Talking to HS players he is well liked and respected in this role. I've heard the plan is for Earley to take over hitting duties himself.

Don't know much about Cliff Pennington, but he was listed as DBU's recruiting coordinator/assistant coach.

His bio indicates he has been pivotal in the offense, base running, and infield.

Seems like a great hire.

He's a little bit overqualified for the job, if we are talking about replacing Fox. It certainly seems that he's coming back for reasons other than following the optimal career development path.

At DBU? From all we've seen I don't see Heefner leaving any time soon. He's still relatively young in terms of coaching age I think.

And even if Heefner leaves and they want Penny back as HC I can't see being an assistant at an SEC program would be a black mark on the resume.

aka….'Head Coach in Waiting'?

I think its not a black mark to be an SEC assistant but he is also closer to a HC job (not at DBU) than not. It really feels like he wants this program back on track and is willing to take a side trip to do so.

Maybe we promised a shot at the job if things go south early on next season.

Most of the times the "bringing the gang back together" involves overpaying or over-promoting someone beyond what they could really get on the open market.

This is one of the rare circumstances where doing that is actually paying off. We are getting someone with qualifications that we would probably not have any shot at other that he wants to come back to A&M.

Great hire, all things considered.

I don't think you have a head coach in waiting when your HC is 37 or whatever.

I just think that as a retired big leaguer, who would have that MLB pension to draw on, he can afford to make some moves out of reasons beyond a straight progression up the career ladder.

If Earley doesn't work out, it's unlikely we are hiring anyone on the staff to replace him, but also unlikely that Cliff would have been a viable candidate in those circumstances. So, worst case scenario, he comes back "home" and enjoys the college town lifestyle for a while; best case, he's perceived as helping save Earley's job, which puts him in line to be first assistant (here or at another SEC school) or to get the head job at a slightly lower level.

Yeah my first thought was that this was a career risk for Pennington.... But the more I think about it, I am with you.

If it works out then he gets a lot of credit and gets to add major SEC assistant coach to his resume. If it doesn't work out, then he still has an impressive enough resume that he should have no problem getting another high profile assistant job.

And no can put a price tag on coming bask home to help "save" your school.

I just barely missed his playing days here, but he has a great reputation as a coach and a hell of a player for the Aggies.

Ecstatic at this news. Like others here, I 100% wanted him on staff last year, but scoffed at the notion of hiim joining in year 2 when it was tossed around the last few weeks. I just wasn't sure he would leave that setup with Heef to hitch his wagon to a coach that just had a pretty poor year.

This to me is a bigger deal than retaining any recruit or current player. Baller move from Coach Mike. Trying to get me on the 2026 Kool-Aid already but I'm going to take it slow...
