Got a little story for ya', Ags!

On May 10, 1869, two ordinary steam locomotives rolled into Promontory Summit, Utah and into history. Central Pacific locomotive Jupiter and Union Pacific No. 119 met to commemorate the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. En route to Promontory for the ceremony, Union Pacific Vice-President Thomas Durant was forced to stop in Piedmont, Wyoming by over 400 laid off tie cutters who had been waiting three months to be paid. During this delay, the rain-swollen Weber River continued to rise and when they reached it, the engineer saw the raging water had removed some of the bridge supports. He refused to cross. They pushed the lighter passenger coaches across with the locomotive and made the call to Ogden for another locomotive to take them the rest of the way. No. 119 to the rescue!

Founded in 1862, the original Union Pacific Rail Road was part of the first transcontinental railroad project, later known as the Overland Route. Over the next century, UP absorbed the Missouri Pacific Railroad, the Western Pacific Railroad, the MissouriKansasTexas Railroad and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. In 1995, the Union Pacific merged with Chicago and North Western Transportation Company, completing its reach into the Upper Midwest. In 1996, the company merged with Southern Pacific Transportation Company, itself a giant system that was absorbed by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.

The White Pass and Yukon Route (reporting mark WPY) is a Canadian and U.S. Class III 3 ft narrow-gauge railroad linking the port of Skagway, Alaska, with Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon, Canada's westernmost and smallest territory. The middle section of the WP&YR operates in British Columbia, Canada's westernmost province. The WP&YR is an isolated railroad system with no direct connection to any other railroad. Its equipment, freight, and passengers are ferried by ship through the Port of Skagway in Alaska,the northernmost ice-free and deep-water North American port.

The WP&YR began construction in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush as a means of reaching the gold fields. With its completion in 1900, it became the primary route to the interior of the Yukon, supplanting the Chilkoot Trail and other routes. The route continued operation until 1982, and in 1988 was partially revived as a heritage railway. In July 2018, the railway was purchased by Carnival Corporation & plc, an American and British cruise operator with a combined fleet of over 90 vessels across eight cruise line brands.

The WP&YR was designated in 1994 as an international historic civil engineering landmark by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a three-foot narrow gauge United States heritage railroad located in the Rocky Mountains in Clear Creek County, Colorado, adjacent to Interstate Highway 70, about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. It is now a tourist train that runs between the communities of Georgetown and Silver Plume, Colorado, along a 4.5-mile-long track that over a distance of two miles. The track ascends an elevation of 640 feet on a grand loop through mountainous terrain, cuts, and fills. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is owned by the Colorado Historical Society and operated by Historic Rail Adventures.

The Georgetown, Breckenridge, and Leadville Railroad was formed in 1881 under the Union Pacific Railroad. The Loop portion of that Railroad's line--now known as the Georgetown Loop--was the crowning segment of the line, crossing the top of a gorge on a 95-foot high trestle. The Georgetown Loop was completed in 1884 to connect the thriving mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume, Colorado, which were separated by a steep and narrow canyon of the Clear Creek.
