1. It set our baseball program back significantly, because instead of being a team that would legit have played for, if not won, a championship - it continued the history of A&M sports failing to take the next step at critical moments. Since then we have been the typical mediocre to slightly-above-mediocre program that made regionals easy (though didn't host much), rarely made supers and it was the outlying years where we made it to Omaha. And we didn't win in Omaha until last year.
I see where you're coming from, but this is too much of an exaggeration. We have not been a mediocre baseball program since the '60s, if ever. While we are not on LSU's level, we are a long way from being anywhere near mediocre...a REAL long way.
Counting this year, in the 35 seasons since we lost to LSU in '89 this is what we've done:
25 regional trips, hosting 13 times
9 years of missing a regional
1 year cancelled due to Covid
67 wins, 34 losses for a .663 winning percentage
Counting this year, in the 26 seasons since super regionals became a thing, this is what we've done:
10 super regionals, hosting 5 times
15 years of missing a super regional
1 year cancelled due to Covid
11 wins, 13 losses for a .458 winning percentage
Note: 2024 super regional results are TBD
During this 35 year timeframe, we have:
5 trips to the College World Series
29 years of missing the CWS
1 year cancelled due to Covid
3 wins, 10 losses for a .231 winning percentage
Our overall post-season record since that fateful day in 1989 is 81 wins and 57 losses for a winning percentage of .587.
So I'll grant you we haven't busted through to become a national powerhouse...but we are certainly better than "mediocre to slightly-above-mediocre." Of the 300+ Division I baseball teams out there, I guarantee you all but maybe about 15 of them would gladly trade places with us.
