Ok ladies and gents, it's here. The BEST sports weekend of the year.

What do you see from the field of 64??

I think it's so hard to look at the brackets in baseball and get excited about #3 & #4 seeds. There's a couple of teams that make noise every year but rarely is anyone really predicting them. Rather, it seems, they stun a 1 seed out of nowhere and then go on a bit of a tear. Think Stony Brook in 2012, Davidson in 2016, etc

If you feel that teams carry momentum from the conference tourneys then Tulane, Evansville, Southern Miss, Duke, Vandy, South Carolina, etc would be definite teams to watch. I tend to think that's overplayed, and often a deep run in the conference tourney can leave your team gassed.

I think it'll be fascinating to see how the Big 12 teams fare this week. By all accounts it was a down year for that conference. Was that because they beat up on each other (because there's certainly roster talent) or because it's just a down year. OU and oSu are both hosting and both are among the favorites to get bounced by power 5 #2 or #3 seeds. I personally think those two teams will show up and play well.

The "big" ACC & SEC 2 seeds are what I'm most fascinated by because they have talent aplenty but have been up and down most of the year. Duke, Wake, Miss St, Vandy, S.Caro, LSU... All could win and the majority of them might be betting favorites. I think 2 of those advance and I'm taking Jekyll & Hyde Wake as my favorite.

I'm pretty fascinated by the West Coast hosts. I'm one of the few believers in the Beavers it seems. But those three host sites all avoided even a single ACC/SEC entrant. I think Arizona is the most likely to go down to DBU or WVU.

And finally, which mid-major jumps up and makes a run? "Every 8 years" is a thing, right? If so 2024 is the year we're due a mid-major champ following up on 2008 Fresno and 2016 Coastal. ECU could be if Yesavage and their 2-name closer are right but I think they lose their own regional. Louisiana probably has the best path if they can somehow knock off A&M and texas then beat the UCSB regional winner. But give me Dallas Baptist to potentially make a run out of the Tucson regional.

LSU and Wake are the 2-seeds I think advance to Supers. Wake is finally healthy and LSU has been really good since the middle of the SEC schedule. The Tigers question is pitching after game 3 and if they lose today or tomorrow that prediction is probably gonna be wrong but if they win today and tomorrow I think they win the tournament.

I think Santa Barbara comes out of that regional and heads to Olsen next weekend to find out the hype is true and that Olsen Field is everything YouTube told them it is.

Watch for Mississippi State in the Virginia regional. That would set up a super with Arkansas if chalk holds in Fayetteville. I'm going to say that one of the four other 13-17 SEC teams (besides LSU, who is somewhat of a fashionable pick to advance) pulls the upset.

I actually think the ACC will represent themselves well this weekend. I expect these vaunted SEC 2 seeds to sort of fizzle.

... What I can't tell is whether I really believe that, or I just want it to happen. I have no love for LSU, State or Vandy so I hope they all lose.

At this point the only teams I care about advancing are the Ags and whoever gives us the easiest path to a natty.

It's happened in the past that we saw the SEC underperform in regionals then still go win the title. It won't during if that happens again. The number of 13-17 teams is in part because of the number of 19+ win teams but what we don't know is are those four really just that good or are the 13-17 teams on the low end of average? Could be that 13-17 this year is a 15-15/16-14 in most years and those teams win their regional and even host in some years.

I'm with you on LSU and State but Vandy is my second team so I always want them to win. Dad graduated from there when I was 7 so it's always been near and dear for my, that damn whistler notwithstanding.

Coastal vs Vandy seems like it would be a more competitive game.

Or maybe Stetson vs FSU. On paper might not seem so close but the Hatters played well against the named Florida schools this season.
