Granger's card said he had a 42 game hitting streak in HS and that he might DH in the minors. I can't remember him ever hitting for the Aggies. Did he?

His last year as our QB he was undefeated at mid-season then lost his job to true freshman. Although we weren't undefeated because of our passing game to be sure. It's a shame his baseball career got cut so short.

I don't recall Granger ever having a plate appearance during his time at A&M. Maybe because of his obligations on the Grid Iron they wanted him to concentrate on where he would most help the Ags on the diamond?

The only pitcher in the MJ era I recall hitting is Trey Moore. Well there was also Trey Witte but I don't recall him ever hitting after he became a relief pitcher. But all that was long ago so I'm sure I'm forgetting someone. Maybe Moose or twk can recall.

Does Chris Russ fit the bill?

He certainly does.

Not the same as Russ, but Kevin Whelan did both, but he converted to a pitcher. Cliff Pennington also pitched at A&M, but not sure if that was under MJ or after Childress arrived.

Penny's final season at A&M was MJ's final season. i forgot that he took the mound occasionally.

Correct, thank you. In my head I was thinking Johnson's last year was 2004.

Man not to put too much pressure but our baseball team needs to have a good season to redeem this sports year for the Ags!

Basketball and football were a distraction to the real sport! Off-season's almost over boys!

This guy brings back memories. Him and Mark Ross were on the team my junior year when Olsen Field was opened, and the Aggies won the SWC that year. What I remember most about that season was the Astros coming to Olsen to play an exhibition game between their spring training and opening day.

When the Aggies would get a runner on first I remember thinking how funny it looked for these skinny white kids to be standing next to Bull Watson. The Aggies won the game 1-0. For sure the Astros weren't taking the game too seriously, a couple of days later they opened against the Reds and shelled Tom Seaver in the early innings. But that was one of about a million times in my life thinking that baseball is a funny game.

I've posted about this game before and no one has ever commented. Am I the only one who remembers it?

That game was documented in the next seasons' media guide. I can post pictures once I get access to my copy again.
Cool! Did the Aggies win 1-0 like I thought? My memory for stuff like that's been pretty good, but surely not infallible. I just posted on the other thread about remembering Chris Cemmons pitching a night game against Baylor in '93, the Friday game I think, wondering if I got that right? Why would I still remember that but can't remember where I put my keys an hour ago?

The Aggies won that game in the bottom of the 10th inning when freshman Rodney Hodde hit a HR over the batter's eye in CF. I was warming up in the bullpen to pitch the 11th when it happened. Even though it didn't mean anything it was pretty cool. Nolan Ryan was so mad that he wouldn't go thru the handshake line after the game

The first image is the1978 exhibition game taken from the 1979 media guide along with the write up. Nolan would not have been there as he was with the Angels then. The last photo is the 1988 exhibition game where Nolan was present. This is from the 1990 media guide. I do not own a copy of the 1989 media guide (unless someone wants to sell me one ) so there may be other photos available in that one.

Thanks for finding this! And my memory was good, the score was 1-0. I guess the photo is of Tom Chandler and Bill Virdon?

The 1988 game which did have Nolan on the Astros ended in a 1-1 tie when the teams didn't want to play extra innings, it was a night game. What I remember about it is that Stretch Suba, the Astros long time bullpen catcher caught for the Astros that game. Biggio would have been their regular catcher that season and I guess he was rested that night. Anyone else remember that?

Sure do. Was there that night. What a fun atmosphere. IIRC Tom Carcione went yard for our one run. Charlie Kerfeld pitched that night for the Stros

So in the Astros history they have played two games against the Aggies and scored a total of one run. Isn't that bizarre? I realize the Astros weren't playing those games like they would a regular season game, but you know they really didn't want to lose to college kids. And even if they just treated them like batting practice they would have wanted to hit.

Nothing like that could happen in any other sport. Baseball is so strange. I guess we love it because of/in spite of that. I can hear Chico Esquela saying " baseball been very, very weird to me".

I blew it yesterday. I'd been planning on a pic of my beloved "53 shirt." The big day came and went, and I completely forgot to scan it/them. One of the first particular shirts I can remember owning.

These are from 1976. I was 4 and felt like a big kid because shirts with numbers were so popular. Includes a pic of the back of the shirt as the entire number is visible.
