If you're still talking about RPI as the primary factor for this cancellation, you don't understand the mind of a baseball coach. This is all about pitching.

I understand the mind of a ball coach, I was one. And this is not solely about pitching. This is about playing a team with a low RPI and the possibility of losing, and it affecting the team more than it's worth playing the game.
I do not agree that we cancelled the game because of the possibility of losing, if that is the case that is weak as hell. I do understand the thought that the game is not worth playing because even winning the game hurts your chances. My guess is we won't see too many Incarnate Words on the schedule moving forward.

What I've learned from what this thread has devolved into is that the RPI formula is flawed because the Ags aren't high enough in its calculations. Our success is the measure of the quality of an index.
The fact that our RPI would take a negative hit by WINNING a game says plenty about the quality of the index. There's nothing maroon tinted about that.

If you want to weigh winning and losing games more than they are now, fine.

But we also just spent a page hearing about how DBU shouldn't be ranked so high because even though they've won a lot of games, they didn't beat enough good teams.

You want a formula won't harm you for playing a bad team? Be prepared for a lot more non-power conference teams with high RPIs.

Folks here will hate that every bit as much as the football board hates every time a non-power team with a good record gets attention.

Sips played an entire series against IW and outscored them 41-4. I can assure you, Schloss was not worried about losing to them.

I think the fix is to remove the bottom handful of wins in the calculation. This would most impact the west coast & north who cannot schedule enough quality teams to begin with. But it also incentives big programs to play close by ones without having to worry about the ROI impact. I thinks it's great we play HBU, IW, Lamar, PVA&M, Tarleton sometimes. But if we're worried about being penalized for it, those small schools won't get the opportunity any longer.

I think another tweak would be to weight weekend series heavier. Clearly that's what you get each teams best. How a teams #4 and #5 starter do on Tuesday and Wednesday shouldn't have equal weight as as series. If you do keep them equal then add a bonus for series or tourney wins.

That would clear up a lot of the heartburn we're seeing right now.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but Bama did this twice last year in order to get in to a regional. Schloss isn't exactly breaking ground. He's just being honest about it.

It's a bad look, not only for us, but for any program that does the same. I thought the same when we didn't play Sam Houston.

Always wearing the white hat hasn't exactly paid off for us. I'm not saying put on the black hat but may try on the grey won.

Does anyone remember in the early days of the Big 12 Conference (or perhaps it was the SWC Conference) tournament, Cliff Gustafson (after our game was rained out) loaded up his team headed back to Austin, so they would not have to play us. A loss would have damaged the sip RPI (or whatever it was called back then) and it would have helped us to get into the NCAA tournament.

I think they won the World Series and Gustafson had the famous statement "Where are the Aggies now?".

I think we did not get an invite to the NCAA's.

1986 SWC Tournament at Olsen Field. Both sippie and piggies left, leaving A&M and Baylor left to determine the leagues auto bid.

This was 1989, sippie got to CWS championship game lost to Wichita State.

Aggies won both the regular season and tournament title in '86. Did make the tournament, did not make much noise.

I thought the second round and semifinal games were rained out. So A&M and Baylor, as the two first-round winners, were automatically moved into the title series.

One thing I do know is that the committee is always shifting their criteria and changing the weights they give each from year to year. Sometimes I really think they make their choices and come up with reasons after the fact. Watch this be the year they don't lean so much on RPI. Watch us end with a host-worthy RPI and not host.

All of this, of course, is moot if we don't go out and win our last two series. Season's not done yet, and we're all acting like it is! Much could still happen.

Smart, absolutely no good can come from playing that game. Other teams (Notre Dame) are doing the same. I think Schloss and AD realize we do have an RPI issue.

That sounds right. Not sure of the details. '86 Tournament was hampered by rain and both t.u. and Arky decided to leave rather than wait it out. Whether either lost their opening round games I don't recall.

The Gustafson quote is definitely from the '89 season.. Use to have some respect for Gus until then.

From the W&M baseball website:

William & Mary Athletics Department was informed late Thursday evening by Notre Dame Athletics officials that logistical team travel issues will cause the cancellation of the Tribe's baseball series against the 12th-ranked Irish, previously scheduled for next weekend (May 6 7).

My bad. And I was not even drinking wine yet.

And I also meant we played no Tuesday game this week. Not last week. I got confused because I was thinking as it matters to next week.

Sorry.

I can't remember if rain affected more than one day, but there was nothing automatic about the decision. There was no rule covering this contingency, so the assistant conference commissioner convened an ad hoc meeting of the coaches, and he, along with Gus and Arkansas coach Norm Debryin, voted to let the sips and hogs go home, with A&M and Baylor playing a best of 3 to decide the automatic bid.

Yep. So Notre Dameish of them.

That was probably W&M's biggest home series of the year.

Not this board but wasn't it BC that pulled this crap for similar reasons 5 or so years ago in shooty hoops? I just remember most folks here were none too pleased...

Yep.

The coach at Incarnate Word coached under Schloss at TCU and is a friend. It was definitely a mutual decision.

That's a good note hadn't heard that. Coupled with them having a Thur-Sat series I can see this being mutually beneficial.

What kind of "logistical team travel issues" could ND possibly have? I'm sure they were flying charter. They have more money than anyone. And the weather in South Bend couldn't be nicer, so it isn't that. If I were W & M, I'd be insulted that ND didn't bother to come up with a plausible excuse.
