Texas A&M takes on No. 13 Georgia in Athens this weekend as Jim Schlossnagle and the Aggies look to keep the momentum rolling. Ahead of Thursday's series opener with the Bulldogs, Schlossnagle joined TexAgs Radio to preview the three-game set.

Key notes from Jim Schlossnagle interview

  • It's a beautiful day in Athens, Georgia. It's awesome. This is a great place.

  • We bussed five hours down to Corpus Christi on Tuesday. We spent the night in Corpus and flew yesterday morning from Corpus to Athens. Don't feel too bad for us. We chartered a flight, and it's pretty big league when you're an Aggie.

  • We're going to throw Nathan Dettmer tonight. I want to leave tomorrow open. We will throw Micah Dallas on Saturday. We'll do what we have to do to win the ballgame tonight before we make a decision on tomorrow.

  • We've been behind the 8-ball pitching-wise since the season started. We've tried to give guys opportunities in the bullpen, and a few people have taken it and run with it. We have to keep Dettmer and Dallas healthy. God forbid one of those guys go down.

  • Dettmer has had two good starts in a row against good teams and really offensive teams. Georgia can really hit too. The ball was flying out of here last night during our batting practice. If he does well, he'll keep us in the ballgame. If you start a series scrambling with the bullpen, very few college teams can handle that.

  • I'm really proud of Ryan Targac, and he has put a lot of work in. When we came here, he was in a group of guys where you talked about his potential. He's a physical guy and a switch hitter. He still strikes out a little bit too much, but the power numbers are there. He really has a chance to be an all-SEC type player during his time here. He can play anywhere, and he has tremendous value.

  • You say Joseph Menefee had some rough moments, but he hasn't recently. Other than the day when we tried to use him on back-to-back days, he has been awesome. His velocity is back up to where it was. We just can't ride him too hard. We won that game the other night, but we had to use Menefee, Jacob Palisch and Brad Rudis. You keep waiting for a starting pitcher other than Dettmer and Dallas to give us some length to allow us to rest these guys.

  • Rudis is an extreme strike-thrower to both sides of the plate. He's going to be a good one for us in the years to come. He doesn't throw the hardest, but he changes the look from some of the other guys that pitch.

  • Having Kole Kaler on our team has been nice. If your second shortstop has been up for defensive awards, that's a good thing. Austin Bost playing second base has been helpful too. He had a really tough catch in that game on Tuesday night too. The fact that Targac can play multiple positions, Kaler is on our team and Bost has plated second well... that has allowed us to keep those bats in the lineup. I don't think Trevor Werner will get to see live pitching before he comes back. He's going to step right in and play.
