I'll let Shane answer, but I'll give you my take. He wants to extend his arms to get his max power generated. And standing close to the plate he would open up the ability for them to pound him in. He likes to pull the ball, so he tries to stand off the plate so he can turn on the inside pitch. 98% of hitters will try to hit half the plate... it's a rare talent that can cover in AND out. So he has chosen in. But most college pitchers can't command both edges of the plate either. It's clear the sip pitcher could command away.
