Forney (Texas) High School pitcher Mason Engler pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory Friday against Marshall to give Forney a sweep of its Class 5A bi-district playoff series. With his performance, Englert now has pitched 55 consecutive scoreless innings, tying a Texas high school record held by former Major League Baseball hurler David Clyde. The former Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians pitcher played his high school ball at Houston Westchester in the 1970s.

Englert hasn't allowed a run since Forney's game on March 9 against Corsicana. The scoreless innings record is according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Englert is a 6-foot-4, 210-pound pitcher who signed with the Aggies on Nov. 13. He's a multiple-time all-state and all-district selection, as well as an academic all-state selection.

Will he go pro immediately or will he show up in the Fall?

It would be fantastic (obviously) to get him on campus, but the odds are long.

Drag bunt on the first pitch, steal 2nd on the 2nd pitch, steal 3rd on the 3rd pitch, squeeze home on the 4th pitch. Keep trying it every inning 'til you get a run. Nothing else seems to be working.

This thread ... https://texags.com/forums/8/topics/2947493

Is really good background on our draft situation and doesn't Shew him as a likely draft risk.

Thanks CapCity! The other thread seems to indicate Englert is not likely to be drafted early, if at all. So's he been lucky to maintain his streak? Or has Forney played lousy competition?

It's all about signability once you get out of the top 5 rounds for high schoolers. Jonathan Childress, Englert's starting pitching teammate and fellow A&M commit, is the better prospect of the 2. If Mason prefers college over a low singing bonus with the chance to improve his stock, i think he has a very good chance to end up on campus. I haven't seen his name on prospect lists yet.

That's a relief, for a minute there, I thought they would spell his last name differently in each paragraph. Anyone know what it really is?

Englert will never make it to campus. Most Mock Draft and draft reports are based on summer performance...he had a minor injury that sidelined him last summer so his exposure was limited. Possible 1st round guy if he had been healthy.

His fastball is up to 95 this spring and the scouts like it. Projected 2nd round pick at this point.

Would have looked good in maroon and white, but not likely at this point.

It will all be known June 4. One way or the other, it will be good for the kid. Inside info? Yes, but the draft is a funny thing, so we will see.

FWIW I have been told that he does not want to play for a MLB club east of Dallas. Therefore if he is drafted by an eastern team, there is a better chance he goes college. However, he can let that be known and have an impact on what team drafts him or an impact on how much a team has to pay him in signing bonus to head east. Either way it looks like he won't make it to campus but there is a chance. Baseball draft can go any direction.

Surely you jest. That's the silliest thing I've ever heard. Who in his position wouldn't want to play for the Yankees or Red Sox (or in their farm systems) for a year or two? Surely he realizes that all MLB teams travel regularly to the East.

The east of Dallas thing is funny! Just not true. I agree with above post. I think his folks are regular middle class people.
