Kaylor Chafin shines with complete game shutout in Farmers 9-0 victory
Following the season, the biggest recruit for A&M baseball and head coach Rob Childress may have been keeping last season's lefty bullpen ace Kaylor Chafin to return for his senior season. That was never more evident than Thursday afternoon when Chafin tossed a complete game (seven innings), two hit shutout to take game four of the series and secure the Omaha Cup for the Farmers in a 9-0 victory over the Plowboys.
At the plate, the Farmers got things going early as JUCO transfer Michael Helman reached base on a fielders choice. The second baseman would steal second and third, before a wild throw by catcher Aaron Walters sailed into left-field, allowing Helman to score easily without a base hit.
Another bright spot for the Farmers was freshman first baseman Will Frizzell who has been exceptional at the plate throughout fall ball. In Thursday's contest, Frizzell went 3-4 with two singles and a double and came around to score twice.
Last season's Freshman All-American Braden Shewmake also impressed Thursday with a 3-4 day at the plate. Shewmake showed off his range in the field as well when he tracked down a ball deep in the hole at short and fired a dart across the diamond to retire the Plowboys leadoff hitter Logan Foster in the first.
The star of the day however belongs to Kaylor Chafin. Chafin was nothing short of spectacular on the mound this afternoon, striking out 10 while issuing no free passes to go along with two hits in his seven innings of work. Once getting two strikes, Chafin relied heavily on the breaking ball in the dirt that hitters couldn't lay off of. It took until the bottom of the sixth inning for a runner to even reach second base against Chafin.
Despite the Farmers securing the series victory this afternoon, the teams will return to Olsen Field tomorrow night for a game five under the lights. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and attendance is open to the public.
