The Texas A&M baseball team returned to the friendly confines of Olsen Field Tuesday as they welcome the Dallas Baptist Patriots to town. After a four-game road trip saw the Aggies take three games, the Aggies needed another win to continue their recent string of success.
They found just that when it was all said and done. The Aggies snatched a victory by a final score of 7-3.
"Really proud of our team. You come off an emotional weekend, and you never know what you are going to get on Tuesdays," said A&M head coach Rob Childress. "We were very professional. (John) Doxakis gave us a great performance, and I thought it was the best he has pitched all year."
Doxakis, Cason Sherrod, Kaylor Chafin, Turner Larkins and Mitchell Kilkenny combined to hold the DBU lineup to just six hits.
The Aggies got the job done with a bevy of strong performances. Doxakis, Cason Sherrod, Kaylor Chafin, Turner Larkins and Mitchell Kilkenny combined to hold the DBU lineup to just six hits. DBU came into the game with a team batting average of .301, and despite three solo home runs, the Aggie pitchers notched eight strikeouts. "Each guy we went to with traffic on the bases got us off the field and did a nice job," said Childress. "We attacked the strike zone, didn't give away free base-runners and took care of the baseball."
Doxakis drew the start for the Aggies and put together a stat line of three and one-third innings pitched, three hits given up, one earned run (a solo home run), two walks and one strikeout. Sherrod relieved the lefty in the fourth and threw two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run (also a solo homer) while issuing one walk and recording two strikeouts.
The rest of the staff combined to pitch three and two-thirds innings. The trio of Aggie pitchers gave up only one hit (a solo home run off Kilkenny) and one earned run, striking out five and walking three.
"I didn't get a chance to get on the mound in Baton Rouge, so it was good to get back out there again," said Chafin. "This bullpen is good right now. Once we started to play a lot of games every week, we got in a lull and now we are finally getting a little magic out of the bullpen again."
At the plate, the Aggies notched eight hits and walked three times. The Ags plated two runs in the third inning, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth to round out the scoring.
Three errors by Dallas Baptist third baseman Matt Duce aided the Aggies throughout the evening. In the third inning, Walker Pennington reached on an E5. The Aggies captured the momentum by slapping three straight singles. Nick Choruby knocked in Pennington, and Logan Foster followed suit with a single of his own, scoring Austin Homan.

In the fifth, Homan led off the inning with a walk, and with two outs, Braden Shewmake put a blooper in the perfect spot to score him from second base. The bottom of the sixth inning was more eventful. Hunter Coleman led it off with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt, Cole Bedford hit a ground ball to third base that got past both the third baseman and the shortstop. Coleman never stopped running and scored easily. After a Walker Pennington fielder's choice resulted in the final E5 of the night, Homan slapped a single to the center fielder and used his aggressiveness on the bases to stretch an RBI-single into an RBI-double.
"I don't like stopping at first base. I like to run, and it may be a little stupid on my part but it works out sometimes," said Homan. "I feel a lot better at the plate. Coach Bolt has been working with me, and Coach Childress talking me up is helping. I am picking up the ball right now and am feeling pretty good at the plate."
Nick Choruby concluded the scoring in the inning with an RBI-ground out to second base that scored Pennington. The Aggies were not done on the evening however. After a Blake Kopetsky bunt single and a Pennington sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning, Choruby notched his third and final RBI of the evening with a single through the right side.
"We have been on the road, and after a good week last week, we were ready to get back and see the crowd," said Choruby. "Johnson was missing big early, and when he came back over the plate, we weren't as ready as we should have been. The second time through the lineup we did a much better job."
With the victory, Texas A&M improved its season record to 20-10. Texas A&M stays home this weekend as they welcome SEC foe Auburn to town. All three games will be broadcast on SECNetwork +.
