In each of the past two seasons, the Texas A&M baseball season has ended one game away from Omaha at the hands of the TCU Horned Frogs. The Aggies came out Saturday night looking to enact some revenge for their recent struggles against their former Southwest Conference foe.
Things started well for A&M, but the result was one Aggie fans are becoming increasingly used to.
The Aggies got the scoring started early in the top half of the first inning. Nick Choruby lead off with a walk and was followed by a Logan Foster single to left. Choruby came around to score on a failed pick-off play of Logan Foster at first to make it 1-0 A&M in the first.
Joel Davis added an infield single to put runners at the corners for the A&M 5-hole hitter, Walker Pennington. Pennington proceeded to park one into the Crawford boxes in left-field to put the Aggies ahead, 4-0. A&M went on to tack on one more run to make it 5-0 after the top of the 1st.
“We started the game with a bang, scored 5 runs in the first, and Stephen Kolek battled,” said A&M head coach Rob Childress.
The Aggies posted 2 more runs in the 5th, which began with a lead-off triple by Braden Shewmake.
Davis plated him with an RBI-single to right in the next at-bat. Hunter Coleman added another RBI single in the rally to push the lead to 7-1 through 4 1/2 innings.
The game began to turn in the 9th inning. A&M catcher Hunter Coleman doubled down the right field line to score two runs and extend the Aggie lead to 10-5.
“After Hunter Coleman extended the lead out of a save situation, we had already made that call to put (Cason Sherrod) in the game,” Childress said.
The only problem was that Sherrod was completely ineffective.
To start the ninth inning, the Aggie bullpen duo of Sherrod and Kyle Richardson combined to walk 5 batters in a row, and by the time Richardson had left the game, the A&M lead was cut to 10-7.
Rob Childress then went to Kaylor Chafin. Chafin gave up three runs in the 9th, two of which were unearned. By the time Chafin got out of the inning, the game was tied at 10.
Although Chafin was a part of the horrific 9th inning, he bounced back to single-handedly keep A&M in the game over the next 5 innings.
“He couldn’t have been any better. He went for us on Wednesday in the start and came back tonight and threw 85 pitches,” said Childress.
Chafin even managed to escape a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the 12th with nobody out. Childress brought in Choruby to play infield to help stop the run.
“It’s something that works every 10 years. It worked in ’07 at Baylor, and it worked again tonight. That’s your only opportunity to get out of a bases-loaded jam when you’re the visiting team.” added Childress.
“Chafin, he was just a lot of heart right there. He’s been doing that all fall and all spring so it doesn’t surprise me one bit from him,” added Davis on the reliever's performance.
However, Chafin was outdone by TCU bullpen hand Sean Wymer.
Wymer entered the game in the top of the 10th inning for TCU and retired the first 15 batters he faced, striking out 9 along the way. As a team TCU sat down 18 straight A&M batters from the 9th to 15th innings, a streak that finally ended when Jorge Gutierrez walked in the top of the 15th. The Aggies also struck out 26 times on the night.
Wymer finished the night with 5.0 IP of perfect baseball.
The game ended in the bottom of the 15th with A&M reliever Lee May Gonzalez on the mound. After Nolan Brown reached on a fielder's choice ground-out and Cam Warner walked, TCU shortstop Ryan Merrill doubled in to the right-center gap, scoring Brown to give the Horned Frogs a walk-off win, 11-10.
The Aggies will be back in action Sunday afternoon to play Baylor in the final game of the Shriners Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Stephen Kolek got the start for A&M, going 4.0 IP, giving up 1 ER on 5 hits and striking out 6. The one run on Kolek’s record came on a Luken Baker RBI-single over the glove of A&M first baseman Joel Davis to bring the game to 5-1 after one inning. The Aggies posted 2 more runs in the 5th, which began with a lead-off triple by Braden Shewmake.

Chafin finished at 6.1 IP, allowing 6 hits and 1 ER and striking out 7. He also added a 'web gem' snag on a hot shot back up the middle and turned it into a double play to end the TCU half of the 13th inning.“Chafin, he was just a lot of heart right there. He’s been doing that all fall and all spring so it doesn’t surprise me one bit from him,” added Davis on the reliever's performance.
