- I missed the first game because of work and listened on the radio - still remember Dave's call (he is the voice of Aggieland because of memories like that). Thought I'd missed all the excitement ... until the second game!

Funny how time fades memories. Dave South didn't call that game. He didn't call any A&M baseball games in '89. Dave had given up his A&M play-by-play job at the end of the '88 season because he was promoted to general manager of the Waco radio station that was his day job. Russ Roberts (KBTX anchor and former baseball player) did the first half of the season, until he got a better TV gig in Little Rock, then the got Bill Schoening, who was working at KSAM in Huntsville, to finish the season. You listened to Schoening's call. Oddly, I'd bet money that his call from that game was part of his audition tape when he was hired the next year to do t.u. baseball and basketball (and eventually, football, before he went to work for the Spurs). John David Crow was AD, and didn't notice that we were lacking a radio play-by-play voice for basketball (Chuck Cooperstein did that) and baseball, but he noticed when the next football season rolled around. One season with Duke Frye was enough to get JDC to create a full-time job in the AD for Dave in order to get him to leave Waco and come back to A&M radio.

Thanks brother. You just crushed a memory.

Seriously, great story though - and JDC was a GREAT back but nearly destroyed the overall athletic department.

I'm not sure I agree with you. It's not like fans went ballistic at every ball game back then. It's like it is today. Big moments at games will spark big reactions.

Case in point, I was at the OU/Tech football game in 2008 when they blasted Tech and that place was electric. It was in the low 30's with wind chills in the 20's and that place was going absolutely nuts.

I was also at Bryant-Denny for the Johnny Heisman game. I've never been in a place so loud during that fourth Q when Bama was making a comeback.

I just think people look at classic games and have that natural, nostalgic feeling that things were better in the old days.

Interesting that the announcers kind of sound like the 1940's newsreel guys. But it was the late 80's!

I've got Byno's Black Magic that he used that season. It was saved from a dumpster at the College Station regional that year. It had too many dents in it and was deemed illegal by the umpire crew and they tossed it out.

My brother was a student manager that year and grabbed all the Aggie bats the umpires canned and brought them home.

Don't remember exactly how I acquired the Black Magic but my son now uses it as a warm up bat and he and his teammates rub their game bats against it ala Pedro Cerrano and the chicken bones in Major League.

Olsen sounded LOUD. People don't go nuts like they used to. The whole damn stadium was jumping up and down for 10 minutes.

They channel thier emotion through social media now. Too hard to jump up and down and type/snapchat/Instagram at the same time.

Other fans get upset now when you get rowdy at sporting events now. Too many people want to sit & watch like they are sitting in their living room in front of their TV.

89 was different. I believe they won their first 31 games. They could be playing nobody on a Tuesday and Olsen was nuts. Two outs in the ninth, two strikes, down two runs, nobody on. It didn't matter, the crowd would go nuts like they were going to somehow win it and they did.

That's where Olsen magic started for me. Every win, it got a little crazier. It was unbelievable and tickets were $2.

Lived very close to Olsen in '89, saw most games from the tracks. Memorable game against Nebraska drinking a beer in a lawn chair on the tracks with a buncha ct's. Sat inside Olsen for the last game against the sips. That one game blew away the whole '88 football season. So much fun.

Man, I wish we could get Olsen back to being that rowdy. That video gives me goosebumps. Love Byington's bat flip as well!

1) Get rid of the damn grassy berms and add some seats. Capacity should be at least 7000 and 8000 would be better.

2) Resurrect Aggie Alley somehow

3) Add outfield seating

If I win mega millions this week, I will build a party patio in the outfield somewhere that will become the rowdiest atmosphere in college sports.

I was there for both games. Still one of the greatest sports days of my life. Awesome to watch the video. If the quality wasn't so bad, I would try to find myself jumping up and down in the stands like a madman.

In Byington's last at bat, his first practice swing, he slightly paused the bat. It looked to me as though he was pointing the bat at the wall. I started yelling "he's calling his shot!" (Hey, I was a goofy and very excited sophomore.) At any rate, the HR went out exactly where he "pointed."

Probably just a slow practice swing, but I will always maintain he called his shot.

Thanks for posting!

We had won so many games that year, and their ace Dressendorfer beat us in game 1, breaking our streak I think.

So, it was indeed huge when Gus brought Dressendorfer back in to face Byington.

If i recall correctly, Gus pretty much destroyed Dressendorfer's career didn't he? Just used up his arm?

That was awesome - the tracks were packed, and since it's not university property, back then you could drink beer and get crazy all game. There will never be a time like that since today you don't even have kid's jungle gyms higher than a few feet for "safety". That series was something special. The 4 run ninth inning comeback was insane.

I remember getting separate tickets in order to enter the stadium earlier in the week. I got a date to the game and he didn't have tickets!!! So I spent game one Friday on the tracks. It was the first time I sat out there as I was always in the stadium. I got drunk and had a blast. I ditched the guy on Sunday because there was no way I was going to miss the games. The 1989 team was my favorite Aggie team. My heart broke in the stands when KT made the last out against LSU. We were planning earlier in the regional to Q drop summer classes to get the cash to go to Omaha. To hell with it, we would deal with the angry parents later. Sadly, that never happened and we mourned the sudden end to a magical season. 58-7 (two losses coming at the regional).

Pardon my ignorance, but has Olsen hosted a super regional since this series in 1989?

Byington will ALWAYS be the greatest Aggie baseball player EVAH because of what he did in those two games and who he did it against!

I still have these tickets that you mention. I had planned to be there for all three games, but it became apparent that was not going to be the case once that Friday arrived as I was part of a group in an advanced COBOL class working on a project that was due the following Monday. This is one of my biggest regrets of my time at Aggieland, not ditching that COBOL group and just going to the games.

The 1989 season was the best I have ever seen. 58-7. Final ranking, #2 (even without an appearance in Omaha, damn that freaking robot we had to face from the Swamp Kitties).
