silly question but sometimes I see the guy running the second base slide and it looks like it opens up the throw for the double play. why slide when you're already out and make it easier for them?

RedAss: because if you don't get out of the way, they throw the ball, it hits you in th neck AND the runner is going to first because you get called for interfering with the play as a retired runner.

You've gotta let the fielder abilty to make the play.
