I wasn't around, obviously, but correct me if I'm wrong...wasn't Texas Stadium, when it opened, pretty much what Jerryworld is today? An over the top, build as many fancy suites as we can, keep the big spenders in the suburbs and away from the "nasty" inner city, ego boost for a rich oil man?
Now it's a symbol of the "good ole days"?
Give the new places some time, they'll build their own list of memories, which is what made those old places special. Playing at Texas Stadium wasn't special because there was something inherently spectacular about a locker room with current Olsen Field style amenities and running down a hallway with electric wire running every which way. It was special because long gone Super Bowl championship teams ran down that same tunnel decades ago. It is the memories that make those places special, to me, at least, and there's not a wrecking ball on this earth that can tear down a memory of mine.
Is it sad to see those places go? Sure. But Olsen Field isn't actually going anywhere, anyways. We'll be watching pitchers from the same pitchers mound, batters in the same batters box, from, generally, the same spot we have been watching them. I enjoy a day at Wrigley Field just as much as the next guy, but I can't say I mind comfortable seats and clean, working bathrooms, either.
The bottom line is that people will be upset either way, renovating the place is probably the best way to balance all the viewpoints and meet the goals of A&M athletics.
