COLLEGE STATION, Texas - A 24-game, season-opening homestand and matchups with 12 NCAA Tournament teams highlight the 2010 Texas A&M baseball schedule, announced Tuesday by head coach Rob Childress.

The Aggies will play 40 of their 56 games at the friendly confines of Olsen Field, where they have won 95 games over the last three seasons. In addition, half of A&M's games in 2010 will be against opponents who will be coming off trips to the NCAA Tournament.

"This is another rugged and challenging schedule, and it's one I know our players, staff and fans alike will be excited about," Childress said. "We have the best fans in the country, and I'm excited about the fact that we'll be able to play so many games in front of the Olsen Field faithful. Without question they give us a big advantage before we even step onto the field."

A&M will open the 2010 campaign on Friday, February 19 when Seton Hall makes its first-ever trip to Olsen Field for a three-game set. The teams' only previous meeting came in the 1964 College World Series.

The Aggies will host Western Illinois (Feb. 26-28), Winthrop (March 5-7) and Washington State (March 12-14), who advanced to the NCAA Norman Regional last season, over the next three weekends. BYU (March 2) and Penn State (March 9-10) will also visit College Station for mid-week matchups.

The first six Big 12 games will also be at Olsen Field, as the Aggies will bring in Texas Tech (March 19-21) to open conference play and then welcome Missouri the following weekend (March 26-28).

Texas A&M will hit the road for the first time on March 30, traveling to San Marcos to face NCAA Tourney team Texas State at Bobcat Stadium. The Aggies will then make a quick turnaround and head to Lawrence for a Thursday-Saturday series at Kansas heading into the Easter weekend.

Other Big 12 teams making the trip to Olsen Field in 2009 are NCAA participants Baylor (April 9), Texas (April 17-18), Oklahoma (April 23-25) and Kansas State (May 21-23). The Aggies will travel to Baylor (April 10-11), Texas (April 16), Nebraska (April 30-May 2) and Oklahoma State (May 14-16).

A&M will host Rice (April 20) and Dallas Baptist (May 6-8) in key non-conference matchups, while road trips for the Aggies include games at NCAA participants TCU (April 13) and Sam Houston State (May 4). A&M will wrap up its non-conference road slate with a trip to Houston to face the Cougars (May 11).

"The Big 12 should once again be one of the best leagues in the nation," Childress said. "I think the non-conference schedule we've put together will give us a great chance to evaluate where we stand and get prepared for league play and beyond. Our goal is always to be the last team standing in Omaha, and that will be no different this season."

The Aggies return six starters and 20 letterwinners from a 2009 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. Fall workouts are scheduled to begin on September 21.

Look at those "W"s at the beginning of the year: Winthrop, Washington State and Western Illinois.

No Aggie Baseball Classic this year?

I like the five non-conference weekend series. Washington State, Winthrop, and Dallas Baptist are solid and should all be top 100 RPI opponents, with Dallas Baptist and Washington State likely to be top 50 opponents. Seton Hall is a middle of the pack team from a decent conference that will likely be in the 125-175 RPI range. My only concern is Western Illinois. They haven't been better than 229 in the RPI in the last 5 years.

Is there a chance at the college baseball classic at Minute Maid?

I live about 4 minutes away now, and that would be REALLY awesome.

We play in the Minute Maid tournament every other year, and we played in the tournament this past season. I expect we will be in it in 2011.

This year it's Texas, Texas Tech, Missouri, TCU, Houston, and Rice.

Goose - We play in that every other year so you have to wait until next season.

One thing I like about the start, is no four game series to start the year. That setup lends itself to losing to an inferior team at least once.

The Ags are on the road Easter weekend...that's good

The burnt orange are in town for Parents Weekend (Sat & Sun)

For the first time in a while A&M closes the conference season (1) at home and (2) against an opponent other than the longhorns

and there's only one Tuesday-Wednesday midweek series (vs. Penn State)
Aggie

24 game homestand to open the season...and 40 regular seaosn home games

are those the most ever??..most I can remember...i think we had a 20 game homestand to begin the 08 season

and I like the schedule...I still wish we had a marquee non conference opponent come to Olsen every year for a weekend set..

With 40 home games season tickets are going to be $400+.

Think Biggio will make the Seton hall series?

"Biggio was an All-American baseball player at Seton Hall University, where he played with other future Major League Baseball stars Mo Vaughn and John Valentin."

And I absolutely freaking HATE this. I get that the friendly confines of Olsen Field typically do good things for our W-L record, but road games (read: road wins) are a tremendous boost for your RPI. Plus, I think it is important that your team learn how to play (and win) away from home. I like that we're playing Texas State in San Marcos, but I'd really like to see us hit the road for a non-conference series in February or March.

We only have 4 non-conference road games all year...Texas State, TCU, Houston and Sam Houston. Is the travel budget that tight? Maybe so...but I think it would be beneficial for the team to hit the road and play at San Diego State, Pepperdine, Auburn, South Alabama, South Florida, Kentucky or Wake Forest...and have them come to Olsen Field the next season. I realize that's easier said than done but geez...I just can't help but think in the long run it would be better for the team to get away from home a little early in the season.

That is a LOT of home games.

Also, I agree with Luke. Home games are nice unless you don't learn how to play an away game.

Sure hurt these programs last year too...

Arkansas played four non-conference road games last year.

North Carolina played three non-conference road games last year.

Texas played five non-conference road games last year and has five on the schedule this year.

LSU played four non-conference road games last year and has three on the schedule this year.

Virginia played two non-conference road games last year.

Arizona State only played two non-conference road games outside the state with others being played at Tuscon (at a spring training park or against Arizona in a non-league matchup.)

Where did all those team's end up last year?

Rob Childress wants to play as many games at home as possible, just like the most of the major programs in the country.

I think most of us know where Biggio went to school.

I have a feeling he'll show up if St. Thomas doesn't have him busy.

I don't know anything officially but based on something I was told last year by a person in the organization, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Craig showed up. I'd really just like to meet him this time around since I missed him last time (which game was that... UTSA or SFA? I think some of the 203 guys met him when he was there).

Is the schedule "set" or will there be changes before the end of the year? If its set, I'll start building the schedule as a file to load into Outlook.

Mrs. Bergstrom and I will be at as many games as we can make. Starting in late March, we are going to have to start missing so we can prepare for the arrival of little Bergstrom.

Scott -

I hear you...and I understand the reasoning behind it. I just don't like it. And, as you know, it's all about me and what I like, right???

And...

Texas may have played only 5 non-conference road games last year, but 3 of those came during a weekend set at Stanford. This year 3 of their 5 will come away from Austin at the Astros College Classic.

Arkansas played 11 home games before hitting the road for a 2-game set at Centenary. The Hogs lost the first game in Shreveport then had the 2nd game cancelled due to bad weather.

Let me say...I'm not thinking we need to hit the road all of the time. I'm just saying that a road trip (even a small one) likely wouldn't hurt us in the long run.

The Texas and Arkansas examples above are what I'm talking about. Nothing huge...just something to change the pace a little bit.

Texas State, TCU and Sam Houston were in the playoffs, Stanford was not.

Cal-Irvine and Rice (x2) were in the playoffs and Stanford was not.

It really doesn't matter if it was a three game set on a weekend or not, the Aggies played three road games against teams that went to the NCAA playoffs ad Texas played two. This year A&M scheduled three road games against teams that went to the playoffs and Texas scheduled three (if they play Mizzo or TCU at Minute Maid).

I am sure the Aggies will go on the road for a three game set against a "name" opponent while Rob Childress is the head coach but I won't be more excited or less excited than if they were playing at Olsen because I will likely be there anyway. Year after year, unless you are a Cinderella team or from California, the majority of the teams that make it to Omaha will play less than eight non-conference games on the road.

Yep...that's why I'd like to be a part of the California non-conference pipeline somehow. We don't have to play the traditional powers like Stanford, Long Beach or Fullerton. I thing it would do good things for us to play at San Diego State, Cal or Fresno State.

I like the way we've played Oregon State, Fullerton, Arizona State and Irvine since Childress arrived. I'd just like to see us continue.

I'd be okay with dropping the Minute Maid Classic and playing a 3-game series out of state instead of that weekend. But the travel budget does have limitations.

Sounds like my train of thought. If it's at all close I will be there (at least for the next season or two... after that it depends where I'm working).
