1. Duke's Coach K To Speak At Leadership Forum April 25

George Bush, 41st President of the United States, will host Coach Mike Krzyzewski, basketball head coach and professor, Duke University, at a leadership forum at 5 p.m. Monday, April 25. The forum, sponsored by the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation, has been moved from the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center to Rudder Auditorium to accommodate a larger audience. Through interaction with current and past leaders, the
series seeks to instill a dedication to public service and country in the true spirit of President Bush, who has called public service a noble calling. This is a ticketed event. Free tickets are available at the MSC Box Office on the campus of Texas A&M University, KBTX-TV, WTAW, The Bryan/College Station Eagle and the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce. I wish Coach K was retire. How they pronounce Mike Krzyzewski as Sha-Shev-Ski is beyond me....maybe Brett Favre or Colonel Sanders can explain it to me.

Well, apparently they've granted him the title of professor, I guess.

Correct, the title of "professor" can be achieved by many ways. Not just teaching at a university for X number of years.

Has he been given an honorary doctorate?

He does not need an honorary doctorate. As the basketball coach, I believe he is considered a tenured faculty member. This is probably pretty subjective, but it's the way that fellow at IU would describe Bob Knight.

As someone with a real doctorate, this sort of honorary stuff, and these "fake" titles, sort of rankle me. Isn't it enough that he makes millions of dollars? Why does he have to accrue some title that he hasn't earned? If someone shows me a copy of his dissertation, I'll desist.

Having read a few dissertations in my time, there are probably better indicators of whether or not someone has "earned" their degree. There is a lot of trash out there that has qualified people for degrees.

I'd say being arguably the best at what he does - which is considered education through athletics would qualify him to be considered whatever the hell ppl think he should be called.

True, but that is largely the fault of the degree mills that hand out titles faster than the public library. In my field, the dissertation can be largely meaningless, as it is merely a compilation of previously published articles. However, it IS representative of having passed numerous cumulative exams, oral exams, research proposals, as well as having completed several years of independent research. Unfortunately, not all doctorates, and CERTAINLY not all Masters degrees, are equal. But to call yourself "doctor" based on an honorary degree is a pretty sorry thing to do.

I don't think he calls himself Dr. Coach K.

from what I've heard there's some left. Guessing that it's part of the Leadership Forum series I'm going to assume he's gonna talk about how leadership effects his staff, team, family, etc. I really dunno, but to be honest he could be talking about what he had for breakfast in Rudder and I'd go see it.

haha, i saw him [walker, texas ranger] as we were all filing out of rudder. he was with a rather young-looking blonde...

as for the forum, that was great. always heard that coach she-shev-ski was a good guy - seems like a real class act. and you heard him...aggies to visit cameron stadium in a bball season near you.

Did he really say A&M would be playing at Duke soon? Sweet!

i should put that into context...someone asked coach k when he and bcg would get together and schedule a non-conference game. coach k laughed and said something to the effect of,

"only if we play at cameron. i'd be afraid to bring my team here."
*audience whoops*
coach k: "see? those would turn into boos really quick."

so it was all in jest. however, i think he was impressed by the campus (of course, you have to flatter the school at which you are speaking...), and i'm sure today didn't hurt our chances to get on to their schedule.
