Aggie Basketball Traditions

the student section at basketball games seams to be really boring. i think it's because most of the students that go to the games don't know that we actually have basketball tradtions, just like we have football and baseball traditions, going back to the days of g. rollie to the more recent Reed Rowdies which has broken up for some reason. here are just a few that EVERYONE needs to start doing at the games to create an atmosphere that is enjoyable for both the players and the fans

1) everyone used to bring a sheet of newspaper to the games. while they were announcing the other team's lineup, we would hold the newspaper up and shake it (it makes alot of noise if everyone does it). then when they're done, wad it up and throw it in the air. we tried to bring this back at the aamu game.

2) when the other team is shooting free throws, we would count the number of dribbles they took at the line (kinda like the practice swings at baseball games). also, the yell leaders last year tried to get the entire student section to saw varsity's horns off while they were shooting free throws. this would compliment the fat shaker.

3) when the other team commits a foul, everyone in the stands yells YOU-YOU-YOU-YOOOOUUUUU!! while pointing at the player each time you say it.

4) this one most people know, but when we are shooting free throws, everyone puts their hands in the air. If the ball goes in, drop your arms and say "WHOOSH, Reload!" (it's okay if your not a senior, we're dead anyway). for the next free throw, say "WHOOSH, BOOOOOOM!!" if it goes in.

5) we need to start standing the entire game (even during timeouts). if we can stand for a 4 hr. football game, we can stand for a 2 hr. basketball game. for those of you who don't know, E. King Gill was also an all-conference basketball player for A&M.

6) if you're a student, stand with us in the student section. be proud to be a student at A&M. your days here are numbered. i look around at every game and see numerous people who are obviously students that sneek into the alumni section so that they don't have to stand and yell with us. if they all came and stood with us, we wouldn't have such a pathetic student section.

7) otherwise, just follow the yell leaders

since most of the people who post on here are basketball fans, it's up to us to spread this around. it's up to us to create a great atmosphere and reputations like that of the "holler house on the brazos" g. rollie white used to have. this is what helps bring in top recruits from texas and around the nation. if there's anymore traditions, old or new, post them here. otherwise, i'll be in the stands if you need me.

BGrimm is right. Believe it or not we used to have pretty solid basketball tradition at Texas A&M at G. Rollie White Coliseum, and there were some other good traditions started at Reed mainly when we were pretty good two years ago. I would really like to see all of these come back full force by the time the Big 12 conference season rolls around. I have lived in C.S. my whole life and went to many basketball games in G. Rollie and believe me, the fans would make the place rock. We can have a good basketball tradition just like volleyball, soccer, football, and baseball. We just need to inform people about the old traditions. And then everybody start joining in and then they will spread. We need every students help in spreading basketball traditions.

Move the student section back to where it was and then I'll stop sneaking into the other sections to watch the game.

How about the Walk Like a Man thing we used to do when the other team traveled. I miss that one.

why do you want crappier seats like we used to have?? at least we get courtside now. besides, we didn't really have a "student section" until last year. before, they just stuck students in the corner and we didn't do anything. if you're refering to sneaking into the season ticket spots, is slightly better seats more important than standing with your fellow students, yelling for the ags, and revamping our aggie traditions? that's terrible ags. besides, jack hildebrand is lobbying to get center court seats for students, if student support goes up. read the last email he sent out all of the students. this won't happen if students don't sit in the student section. they've given us better seats the past couple of years, and we'll get better ones if we earn them. the 12th man earned them in football, that's why we get damn near half the stadium.

here's the link at the end of jack hildebrand's email: http://sga.tamu.edu/cc.php
if student support doesn't go up, the athletic department will see no need to move season ticket holders to move students to center court and this proposal won't go through. students standing in the student section is a GOOD thing.

i think this died off b/c the Big XII had a rule that you cant throw things onto the court - people should still be shaking their papers though

I went to all the home games in 93 and 95-98 - G rollie used to really rock, no reason for Reed not to (except for the bad seating arrangements)

the You-you-you thing and the counting of the free throw dribbles was pretty much started at A&M by the guys that stood in my section (2nd section from the entrance on the student side) - most were Raggies.

I really miss being able to stand on the floor.

I think we ought to go to a seating format like Florida has. They were on TV yesterday and you could see the students going nuts in the first 5 or 6 rows from baseline to baseline along the near sideline. General public/season ticket holders were behind them.

We could put more of the season ticket holders on the far side (behind the team benches) and put the students along the sideline for 5 or 6 rows from 104-106.

the "walk like a man" thing was the gayest display ever in the history of aggie athletics.

the fact that we even have to review this stuff is pathetic, ala UH with football.

sadly most students won't show up unitl the spring/when conference play starts. its a shame. we have a hard working team this year and reed could really rock if we wanted it to.

I should point out that my suggestion assumes more than 500 students get off their ass and come to Reed every game, which isn't happening yet. But if it did...

Well in defense of students for this week anyway, it is finals week. Of course I always thought it would make a good study break, but I never had to take organic chem or the like. And we'll actually be a couple weeks into conference before most students even get back from christmas. Though students do need to start showing up for both men and womens games. For those that havent been to a girls game this year, they are on a 6 game winning streak with the closest win being by 15 i believe.

Yeah, we've heard it all. I really wasn't flaming on the students, just being honest. Yeah, I studied a lot on Saturday afternoon too.............

So it goes. It would be cool, I think, if we could get enough to fill a seating arrangement like that.

Hey I like the Florida seating arrangement as well. Many prominent programs, have similar seating. However notice carefully, that the TV cameras show the students. Students at those venues are across from the TV cameras. The teams are facing the students. Most student proposals that I have heard and seen, have students on the north side and under the baskets. Unfortunately, they would not show on TV (assuming we have a televised game; only the season ticket holders behind the benches (and they rarely standup and jump up and down). Our arena is not set up to promote excitement, even to show some excitement on TV.

There is nothing worse for recruiting and promoting TAMU than our section behind the west end. No one except the Hullabalu and a few stragglers can be found. A great shot for TV! The team is doing its part now Reed management, 12th Man, and students need to work out a seating arrangement that promotes BB.
billydean05

A seating arrangement is in the works, but the athletic department is not going to give it to us if we won't be able to fill it up. Our SBP has been working to make the whole side facing the players student general admission seating, which is a step in the right direction. Now, the rest of this year, we, the students need to show up and support basketball abd prove to everybody that we deserve these seats because so far this year, we have definitely not proven that we have any support for basketball.

I was kinda starting to wonder about basketball. Have the Reed Rowdies been disbanded? Why aren't they there and why haven't I been getting their emails. About the basketball traditions, I think those are great, on reedrowdies.com there is a hecklers guide, most of the stuff I remember (except for AAAAAA being dead). Also, in 2002-2003, we used to stand across from the visiting team, I thought that was great, felt much closer to the game whereas now I feel not nearly as close or at least I don't feel like we are making a constant impact.

Hopefully you didn't really mean the whole side. That would be ridiculous. We need to have the most rabid fans near the court, and that would include those few hundred students that would get there early enough to snag those seats. I'd rather see the real fans fight to get those close seats and limit them than give them the entire side of the arena to lounge like they do now on the end.
But, as has been pointed out this all moot until the attendance goes from 95% alumni/5% students to something closer to 50%/50%.

i think the seating arrangement for students should be the first 8 rows or so (however many rows that very bottom section is) from baseline to baseline accross from the benches. of course, we could fill up the entire area behind that as well for the tu and tech games, possibly others. the tickets there could be reserved but still given to students who show up late. checking ticket stubs at the doors would also help. also, surley06, if you remember correctly, the students all had to sneak into the section right accross from the visitor's bench (sec. 104). the bottom rows were all reserved. of course, i didn't mind sneaking into those better seats at that time because they didn't try to create any kind of atmosphere for the student section. sometimes we got lucky and pulled some of the top rows in that section. otherwise, the students were put in sections 102 and 103 in the corner which are up off of the floor. they may have given students seats in the lower part of section 104 for the bigger games such as tu, tech, and ou, but the very bottom (rows AA-??) were still reserved. as it is, i'd say we're pretty close to the game right now. you can't get much closer than actually touching the players or the ball when they go out of bounds. you can't even do that along the sideline (except plays like antoine's). they'll get it right, in the mean time we have to show up and support our team. whereever they put us, i'll show up early enough to get the best seats anyway.

Reed Rowdies. Still around? Have not heard about any meetings this year..Anyone know?
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I also have not heard anything. NOTHING has been sent out and if something isn't being done by the first I'm going to start trying to make things happen from inside and see what I can get done. If anyone on here is a Rowdy lets freaking get it going. I've been busy with choir stuff ending the semester but now I'm done with that for a while.

The Reed Rowdies need to come back. 2 years ago when we weren't completely terrible they did a great job making the games fun. The 2 games I have been to this year have been dead silent. I graduate in a few days so unfortunately I can't contribute but I hope to see a full house on TV someday when we are winning.

the students at UF dont sit in the lower rows - those are alumni you are seeing on tv

bgrimm, they are given the same information that the football players are. I understand what you are saying, but all athletes on campus have access to the same resources. For those that arent athletes things are a little more difficult. I know for a fact that 4.0 & Go was full most of friday night, saturday, and sunday. If the other study services were just as busy that is a lot of students that could be at the games.

I have been going to basketball games since 1998, when I first started at A&M. Back then, students got to sit in center court and just to the side of center court.

Then the student section got moved.

Since then, I dont enjoy going as much because I dont like the view of the game from the side. You are more "in the action" from around center court.

I am a returning student, and I have an all sports pass. I have yet to miss a game this season. However, since the students sit to the side, I purchased public season tickets so I could have a better view of the game.

I think more students would show up if they were allocated better seats.

The game I saw a week or two ago showed UF students 4 or 6 rows deep RIGHT next to the court. There were no old alums sitting in front of them.

basketball is a fair weather game. When the team is winning the students will be there, when the team is losing they wont. Tonight was the largest student turnout i've seen all year. Of course most seemed like they were there just to say they've been to a game, but they still had a butt in the seat so its a start. We just gotta find someway to inform the students of what they are supposed to do at the games. I mean the shaking the paper thing is kinda stupid with only 20 people in a crowd of 6000 doing it. Here's my thought on everything, get the students to the games first, then get them into the game. When the students are into the game, the team will play "better" which will result in wins. The team starts winning more students start showing up, athletic department gives the students seating all around the floor.

I remember seeing that at G Rollie when i went to games as a kid. I don't think i've ever seen it at Reed. GRW rocked when it was packed. It wasn't called the Holler House for nothing.

the whole "You You Youuuu" thing has always seemed kinda stupid to me. but, whatever. all in good fun.

Also, when the opposing coach would get up off the bench and give the officials an earful, we would yell,"Sit down bus driver."
Icecream_Ag

we try to do the Sit down busdriver, but by the time the yell leaders figure out whats going play has already started. Of course not many opportunities to yell at the coach when we have big lead.

You should print these out and make copies, then go place them on each seat in Reed. Then maybe people would start keeping the traditions.
