So does the SEC suck or it's pretty good: top down?

Mississippi state beats Auburn, Missouri beats vandy. Ole Miss gave us a run. Alabama without cheating beat Arkansas.

I say it's a good league with good teams and Florida is really the only team I would say is heads and shoulders the most consistent.

What say ya'll?

Top to bottom the league is probably the best in the country but the top third is not on par with the Big 12 , Big 10, and maybe the ACC.

It's the best conference by the metrics, it just lacks elite teams, so it kind of depends on what people mean when they say "best conference."

An average team would be expected to have fewer wins in the SEC than in any other conference, but they'd also have a decent chance to win almost every game except Florida.

Ultimately it's shaken about how we expected before the year, with a lead pack that includes Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Alabama. Little bit of a surprise that Vandy is part of that pack.

It's pretty close between the SEC, B1G and Big 12 though. The Big Ten has three teams worse than anyone in the SEC but also has four teams better than anyone except Florida. The Big 12 has four teams better than anyone except Florida also but the bottom of that league is worse.

Next logical discussion question:

How many SEC teams make the dance?

How many make the second weekend?

How many make the final 4?

My guesses:

7 make the dance

3 to the sweet 16

1 to the final 4.

If that was correct, would that be exceeding, below, or on par with SEC expectations based on the lack of media love this year?

More than 7 are going to make it. I'm going to guess 10 and there's a chance at 11 but I'm guessing either Georgia or Missouri screws it up.

But after that who knows. It's just going to depend on the matchups. The only team I have any kind of confidence in is Florida and they're one of the worst three point shooting teams in college basketball.

And the lack of media love isn't surprising when the league hasn't had any clear national title contenders all season. Even Florida has just somewhat recently started to round into form.

Take my guesses above with sweet sixteen and final four teams. Would those numbers prove we should have gotten more love, or be about on par with the media fare?

10-11 make the dance. Without seeing the matchups, it is impossible to say how many will make the sweet sixteen and final four.

I would say there are about 6 teams you don't want in your immediate bracket (might play in the round of 32): Michigan, Arizona, Duke, UConn, Illinois, and Florida.

I think your national champ comes out of this group.

I am starting to feel pretty confident that Florida has evolved this season into the best team in the country. I think they can repeat.

I forgot to answer this but I'm not sure how you can retroactively assign media value to a conference based on tournament results. This is a deep league but with a bunch of teams that probably have no shot at winning the national championship so I'm not sure what more there is for the media to talk about. But Gameday is at an SEC game next weekend.

I wouldn't be shocked at 10 teams dancing. Florida has enough size and talent in their frontcourt that they might make another run if they can just avoid any crazy shooting performances by their opponents.

Past the gators, I don't think any of the SEC squads would shock me if they made a second weekend run.

Crazy how the conference power dynamics match for both football and men's basketball this year.

I'd add Houston and iowa St to the list . I would have said Tech as well with Toppin but not without him.

I expect 10 SEC tourney bids.

Oh, those two are top teams. No doubt. But i think they can be beat by a very good team. The six i referenced above are my most likely that if they lose a game in the tourney, it is because they got beat by an elite team, not a very good team.

Gives me an idea to do a post on betting the tourney. Something I will probably post next week as I know i will be slammed this week with work.

I think the top 2/3 are in the tournament at this point. I am willing to bet there will not be many highly seeded teams that are going to say "oh goodie, we get (insert SEC team) as our opponent." The SEC may be down on the top end but there are few "easy outs." It all depends on the match-ups and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if there were not a handful of teams from the league making the sweet 16.
