I know we love to keep tabs on our former coaches - looks like Turgeon has finally landed somewhere that might feel more like "home".

Interesting since he's been out of coaching for 5 years. Good for him and best of luck. Would be nice to add them to our non conference schedule.

Did he get bored? I always thought he retired a little early.

Yeah I had forgotten this part. Weird deal. I assume something was up in his personal life.

Turgeon stepped down less than one month into the 2020-21 season, shortly after signing a three-year contract extension.

For some reason, I like this hire for both Coach Turgeon and UMKC. That reminds me of also liking the Mack Brown football hire at UNC. And, somehow that morphed into Bill Belichick a few years later. Not sure what an equivalent progression would be for basketball at UMKC.

We averaged 11,582 in conference play under Turgeon (best under any coach) and we had 2 of our 3 BEST season attendance averages under Turgeon in the past 21 years.

Gillispie: 11,453
Kennedy: 8,467
Buzz: 9,665

Best attended games in the Turgeon era

You don't connect with your fanbase by whining but by winning. Turg was one of the biggest whiners ever. And you clearly believed what he was saying only to be corrected by the facts about attendance.

World class *******. I will never get over his "ridiculous expectations" comments about A&M. And then he goes to Maryland, where they REALLY ARE ridiculous.

I think he would have had a very nice career here had he stayed. But I'm glad he left, even if we had to suffer for a decade and a half.

Wasn't a complete dig at Maryland as much as it was him recognizing he may have been prioritizing the wrong thing for a long time.

Say what you want about Turge, but he was one obvious call, where the refs instead swallowed their whistles, from likely taking a&m to the final 4. My only complaint he seemed to mail in recruiting once he knew he was gone (like buzz).

I also think all that talk from Turge not taking it as serious anymore, is him bs'ing himself. Once he gets in the small conference battles at umkc, he will be freaking out on the sideline as normal. He's a competitor and that's not going away.

No. What it is, is he likes to try to smack down his previous employer for whatever reason. That should be crystal clear now.

I'm not saying he's wrong about what he said about Maryland, but it was just as true when he left A&M as it is now. So he is sort of insulting himself. Kind of like when someone takes you to school and you say, "they're not that good." Oh, yeah? They just whooped your ass. Pretty stupid thing to say if you think about it.

We all know what Turgeon wants in terms of his career goals and thats to be the head coach of literally or metaphorically "Kansas"

The Maryland job was a step up in several ways, but not nearly all of them and arguably took him further from his goal. Maryland is nowhere close to Kansas, its a program where they are basically as good as the head coach they hire, just as Texas A&M and most programs are.
