Nm I read that wrong. You're right that there shouldn't be a distinction between domestic and foreign professional leagues, but there is a clear distinction between prospective and returning players.

I can't find an example of an American kid playing in college, then going to Europe to play professionally and then trying to come back to play college ball. That would I guess be the truest test of how rigid the NCAA is the distinction between NBA and Euro contracts.

But at least when it comes to prospective NCAA basketball players the NCAA has drawn a clear stance that NBA is different than Euro league. And now for returning, they are using the same language by specifically referring in Nnaji's case to NBA contracts when comparing him to the Euro league guys.

It is a little bit different too for an American-born player. They would know that going pro forfeits their college eligibility.

But all of this is just incredibly stupid.

I'm fine with juco years not counting, or they count as one year no matter how many you play or something, but going pro and coming back should be absolutely out of the question.

I really don't understand this take. Why boo the kid. Go to Indy and boo the NCAA for their ineptitude.

It's not like the kid was on the Spurs playing legit minutes and then Oats calls him up looking for reinforcements.

He spent a couple of miserable years riding buses in the G-League, got no run at all in any NBA games, then went back to Bama to get his degree. Gets to Bama and the idea of playing ball there comes up and now they are challenging it.

By the logic of "boo all guys with professional experience" I guess we should be booing Dominguez? Or the nuance in the Euro ball vs. G-League experience makes that much of a difference for you all?

Also, the opening tweet is awful, makes him look like a super villain.

He played in a G-League game last weekend.

I do not think this is a situation where he went back to Bama to get his degree and then had a lightbulb moment and wanted to rejoin the basketball team.

It sounds like he went back to Bama for the sole purpose of doing that, was not allowed to, and is exploiting a legal loophole from a homer judge.

Seems pretty whack.

What I am not sure I fully understand is how is the NBA/G-League team he's under contract with okay with this? He played in a game last week, did they release him? Or I assume that contract would have some sort of buy out on his end to be able to leave.

NCAA just approved jersey patches for next year.

Please please please let Trojan condoms be the sponsor for USC

And as it relates to this thread, why are we still pretending that amateur sports exists when the NCAA clearly doesn't give a crap about amateurism

I admit that I assumed he left his g league team in December. Looks way worse to have played so recently.

Courts and corrupt judges are ruining this country in multiple ways. We are becoming a country governed or ruled by courts. It is not survivable.

If this continues to go through and the lines between the pros and amateurs continually blur or become mixed, can we petition the following in the future? Unrelated sports comparison but following the same thought: can we petition the Olympic committee to return the Carlisle Indian, Jim Thorpe's Olympic medals? He was truly a once in a generation athlete who did earn money playing baseball for a short period without (I believe) knowing the implications from what I've read. Just musing.

There are already some pros playing in the Olympics, baseball, hockey, bobsledding, etcl; the Soviet Union played their "pro" hockey team (the Red Army Team) for years during the Olympic games.

I think it's a pretty good chance Bediako loses the actual hearing. But that hearing has now been delayed and the TRO extended another 10 days. So it looks like he will play against us.

The NCAA has asked the "honorable" Judge Jim Roberts to recuse himself because he is a member of the Crimson Tide Foundation and is a member of their Circle level of giving ($100k-$250k). Pretty nice gift for a guy that didn't even go to college there. This is the same Foundation that Nick Saban donates his money to Bama through.

American judges have lost their way when they can't see in the most obvious conflicts of interest that they should step down. This would be like Tony Buzbee becoming a judge and then asking him if DeAndre Jordan should be made available for the NCAA tournament.

"Immediately eligible".

Is he enrolled at Bama or are we past the point of pretending that matters?

What are you insinuating? He's just a poor boy who 2 weeks ago came to a life decision and decided to leave professional US basketball, took what pennies he had left and got on a greyhound to nowhere. As luck had it, that bus stopped in a town called Tuscaloosa and all the sudden he was back on the campus of his old school and decided he needed a college degree to move on with his life. Basketball wasn't even in his thoughts.

After begging and pleading, he was allowed admittance late after the semester had already started, and though he knew it would be a challenge to get caught up, he immediately started cramming in the library till the wee hours of the morning.

It was one of those late night sessions that he had his head down reading a biology book as he was walking and accidentally bumped into another fella in the halls. That fella happened to be Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats. It took a few minutes but Oats finally remembered who he was.

After an hour of catching up, Oats learned for the very first time that he had come back to school, and while he was on hard times and struggling with his coursework, Oats knew that just giving him the chance to play basketball could be the thing that gets him from struggling to finish the semester to possibly his masters or phd.

This unbelievably random moment is what led to this situation. To think differently would mean you should boo Dominguez.

Of course he enrolled. After living the past few years in Austin, Grand Rapids and most recently, Detroit, the Canadian born player decided to move back to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to pursue a degree to provide himself a better life after realizing his basketball career wasn't working out. He was probably in the library studying for his first exam, even those the semester started 10 days prior to him playing his last game for Motor City. Fortunately, those last few games were actually played in Birmingham, so not too difficult to take a break from his studies.

Kidding aside, I'm guessing he didn't enroll for the normal term that started Jan 7th, and is actually enrolling in Spring II that begins Feb 9th. This was clearly orchestrated by Oats and his staff...pathetic.

Relevant to this thread. At least this kid has some quotes in here explaining his justification for trying to come back to school. I'm ok with this as long as Euro pros are playing college ball. The moment they are ineligible, then I'm fine keeping these 2-way kids ineligible as well. Just make it standardized.

Nope. College basketball should be a one way street. Once you go pro you can't come back. If you were a pro before that's different but I'd put an age limit.

But it's not like some of rule nobody understands, when you go pro, your forfeit your eligibility

I'm curious as to why you believe being a pro first is a notable distinction?

My logic is pretty centered around the idea that either all pros are eligible or no pros are eligible. I'd prefer no pros are eligible, but that's not the world we have right now.

Dominguez is 23 years old with 4 years of pro experience and moonlighting as a sophomore. I get that he's our guy and we want to win and it's within the rules. But it's a bit farcical that some of you see his situation as radically different.

bobinator

Well that's why I'd have an age limit also because international pros coming over at age 22 is ridiculous also. But again that's legal right now, so whatever. We didn't have to sue anyone to get Dominguez eligible.

But it's a distinction because everyone knows those are the rules. You can play college ball once, and if you sign a pro contract you forfeit being able to ever play it again.

The infrastructure of college athletics as it relates to professional sports overseas is so wildly different than that of the United States. This notion alone makes your argument weak.

Add in that the rules were the rules and very well known to everyone and the drum you keep beating sounds dumber with each example you bring up.
