Since Shelby Metcalf, we have hired quite a few coaches. Most were up-and-comers. We don't pay top dollar. There is no reason to expect A&M to pay top dollar now given NiL, Jimbo's payout, home attendance, etc.

Here is the grade I'd give A&M for each hire:
Kermit Davis, Jr. - F
Tony Barone - D+
Melvin Watkins - F
Billy Gillespie - A+
Mark Turgeon - A-
Billy Kennedy - B
Buzz Williams - B

Given these grades, we run a big risk of getting someone worse than Buzz. If you disagree with my assessment of A&M's hires since Shelby, please chime in.

What do you mean "we won't spend?"

We certainly spent on Buzz. We dropped heavy extensions/raises on Gillespie and Turgeon.

Fact is, you can't just moneywhip everybody. Look at places like Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina. And we aren't them.

Remember when we targeted Jeff Van Gundy to replace Turgeon?

Then the hire Kyle Keller contingent popped up when BK got fired, while also expecting us to hire Mark Few.

The only thing more entertaining than the hand-wrong on"Will a coach leave" is "who the hell will we hire and also why haven't we already hired them?"

College sports are basically a men's version of a soap opera. And if we do go through another coaching search it'll probably be more entertaining than Buzz's offensive scheme.

It seems the very definition of BAS to make a list showing we haven't made a bad hire in basketball since 1998 (almost 30 years ago!) and from that assume we run a big risk of making a bad hire.

They showed a graphic of where all the shots were taken last night of Bama Duke (missed vs made shots I think for Duke )

It made me sad that that is the game known and I understand analytics but the game isn't going back to the spot up mid range jumper anytime soon if ever

Buzz is Salutatorian on that list - second only to BCG - and BOTH of them had to completely resurrect the dumpster fire that they both inherited from the horrible coaches that preceded them - though at least BCG had some young talent in Antoine Wright and Acie Law to build around.

For now, I bet Luke appears over here next season now that he's cemented as the new hoops guy at TA. Dude is killing it…and not a nerd like Hop was

I know tournament success wasn't there but giving Buzz the same grade as BK is wild. Only reason BK made it to two sweet 16s was because of Stansbury's recruiting. He was a worse coach than Buzz and we average 24 wins a year the last 4 years under Buzz

I hope so. This is best board except when we lose and hire coaches

BK a B grade? If he did such a solid job, who hired him after?

Oh yeah, even a small conference team passed on him.

And then he went to be an asst on a historically bad WSU squad. BK is not a good coach. He got extremely lucky one year in the tourney. Prior to his first tourney run- he had boosters step up to the plate to deliver him some studs (and through Johnson).

Doesn't make a good coach though. He sucked at coaching. Maybe the disease was at fault, I don't know.

That's BS. Buzz is in the top tier and has a rich buyout clause

Our crappy AD and university management folks have to be one of the very worst in all of the NCAA when it comes to pay and buyout negotiations. They create lifetime contracts with roll over clauses, insane extensions and no accountability for poor performance. If I were teaching a class in major college athletic department management, when the section on coach hires came up I'd have to use A&M as the classic example of how NOT to do it. A mistake is one thing ... it happens. But we have a rich legacy in making those mistakes on a repetitive basis.
