Why was a flagrant foul called on Payne early in the game?

I was at the game, didn't get a good look, saw the replay and looked like a common foul from what I could tell.

They called him for a hook and hold

Why would that be flagrant?

Automatically a flagrant.

I didn't know that they can change the call on a review; it seemed like a 50/50 call.

AI says:

A "hook and hold flagrant" in the NCAA refers to a foul where a player uses their hands to excessively grab or "hook" onto an opponent while attempting to box out or rebound, often considered a flagrant 1 foul, meaning the opposing team gets two free throws and possession of the ball; this foul is often called on bigger players battling for rebounds and is designed to prevent dangerous contact and potential injuries.

Can really hurt someone doing it

Didn't know that. Is it the hold that makes it flagrant because I have seen hooks being called common fouls this year.

Never mind , rlb provided the answer.

They can't except in this case because it's so hard to see live. Been a major point of emphasis the last couple years because of how many shoulder injuries they were starting to see.

Yeah it's less a hook than in the offensive foul case and it's a "hook" in that you have your arm looped around the opposing players arm and then you're clamping down by pinning it to you.

Far less flagrant than Andy getting straight up shoved to the ground from behind

It wasn't a hook and hold. It was a horrible call. Ivisec pushed him down.

Lousy call. They also changed a foul call that would've fouled their best scorer out even though both guys fouled Andy

Exactly my thought the second it happened.

I keep hearing that and could see how that could be true, but in 40 years around basketball, I never remeber an injury from this.

Terrible call. You can't throw your elbow around someone's throat and then get a foul because you get pulled down while he's spinning to the ground.

Basketball officiating is the worst.

The announcers thought they called the foul on Arkie. Then review…. nah we're going to call a flagrant on A&M instead.

Also, I never saw what caused the cut on Henry's face ? I assumed elbow but didn't see it happen. Anyone see that clearly?

That was the original call was a foul on Arkansas. I didn't have a good angle on it and didn't see a replay so no clue if it was the right call but I think they need to take a look at that rule in the offseason because people have started using it to their advantage and basically using another players arm to hook and hold themselves.

I don't like it being automatically upgraded to a flagrant either. I get the injury concern, it's valid, but that's just a huge penalty, especially if the fouling team is on offense.

You've now surrendered possession and two free throws.

I get they can call a flagrant on us if we committed it, but didn't realize you can call a foul and then take it back because of a flagrant. Both can happen.

Yeah I was just pointing out they normally can't but hook and hold is an exception. I like that it's an exception because it's hard to spot though. But should be reserved for legitimate attempts to hook and hold, not just hand fighting around the basket or whatever.

Agree. I would still prefer if they called a legitimate foul on Ark it can't be trumped by a flagrant after. Give them a foul but also give them the free throws and the ball back for the flrgrant.

I see that point. Shouldn't be able to undo something that happened and was called before the hook and hold.

It really wasn't a hook and hold. It was more of a pin and hold. 44 extended his arm to help box out Payne. Payne took that arm and used his elbow to pin his arm on his side and went up with the other arm. It definitely should have been a flagrant, but they should have kept the foul on 44 because he also fouled initially

i think if they see a flagrant they can call it after the fact even if they didnt call it, but not sure about the undoing of the other guy's foul.

Hooking and clamping can be very dangerous to the shoulder area, thouhh im no Dr. and ddidnt even stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Yeah, if you hook and spin away you can hurt someone's shoulder.

I played ball 40 and never saw that happen.

Uh, there's some folks over on the Football Forum that would disagree.
