Is it reasonable to describe Tenn and A&M as very similar teams?

Is is reasonable to describe A&M as a slightly lesser version of Tennesee?

Kenpom Numbers as of Feb 6th

Offense Rating: Tenn (34), A&M (33)
Defense Rating: Tenn (1), A&M (6)
Pace/Tempo: Tenn (338), A&M (222)
Overall: Tenn (4), A&M (14)

Both are currently swimming in 1 and 2 seed waters in current bracket projections.

Both led by a star undersized veteran PG. Both have deep rosters full of seniors and 5th year players. Both play a slower pace physical style centered around an elite defense and an offense that isn't 'bad' with regards to overall efficiency rating but is prone to long scoring droughts with poor shooting displays.

How would ya'll describe the biggest differences between this year's Vols and Aggies with regards to pros/cons of either compared to the other?

These questions crossed my mind last night watching Mizzou playing the Vols, wondering if the Aggies on Saturday would now be a pretty similar matchup for the Tigers.

this is TexAgs, nothing can be reasonable

It's a very reasonable comparison imo. We have a depth advantage on them which matters in the tourney imo.

One noticeable difference is that they've shot almost 100 more 3's than we have

Both of our dynamo PGs have been a bit banged up

i think it is very reasonable to make this comparison and even shared that thought on a previous thread about the ranking bias. i still don't understand how they are ranked that much higher than us other than perception. tennessee has been a good to great basketball program for quite some time so i get it but this ags team is pretty salty and in my estimation they can beat anyone in the nation if they play their A game.

Said earlier this year on a thread talking about how rare a team like us is that I think there's two teams that are a lot like us, Houston and Tennessee.

Tennessee's offense does things a lot differently than we do, but otherwise I think we're very similar. That's why I said the other day that I wished Missouri played someone else in the midweek (not that we can complain that we're coming off a bye and they aren't.)

They do play defense in a more traditional way than we do though and they're extremely good at it.

Yes I'd say it's a reasonable; the most interesting stat I found was that they have the worst shooting percentage in the SEC.

They're a low scoring grinding team that's for sure and I'm sure the first to 50 will win the game at Reed.

On paper and philosophically, absolutely. Streaky offense and elite defense. The nuances of how we do it are a bit different, but the results are similar.

When I watch UT live, they look like a slightly longer, more athletic version of A&M at most positions.

The "more athletic part" is what hurts us ranking wise. Everybody disses us because of our style including 50% of Texags. We're as athletic as anyone but unorthodox. I love it.

We catch people off guard including our own fans.

When I think of Rick Barnes, I think of big, white, forwards....is that a style?

I posted this on another thread, but they just had a game with 21 assists. They move the ball, we don't.

Our team does it way differently on the offensive side relying on our offensive rebounding rate to offset a relative inability to create good looks within the offense.

Similar I guess in that we both play defense well and sometimes struggle to score, but the X's and O's of how each team does it aren't super similar.

The physicality of the teams is the biggest thing we have in common, we both love a street fight.

I just heard Bob call Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Houston as 3 out of the final 4 teams. Is that what yall heard!!?

Iowa State looks the most like us IMO. Outside of their size with Dishon Jackson at center, they play very much like we do with a bunch of veterans, tough defense, and tons of trips to the line.

They can't collapse a defense off the bounce like we can. We have 3 guys who can get into the paint. Ziegler is really good but he isn't a finisher

They're also a much better shooting/passing team

A team whose profile looks a lot like us on paper is Michigan State but I haven't watched them much this year to know if it looks similar on the court.

Same. Haven't watched the Spartans outside a few minutes here and there. Izzo with a 4 seed or better team is always scary

The Vols are more capable shooters. Okpara is a really good shot blocker. Milicic is a versatile big man. Gaines is streaky off of the bench, but when he's on, he's on. Lanier can really shoot. Ziegler is the top of the SEC in assists. They shot 65% from 3 against Mizzou on the road. They play better base defense than we do. We close out on shooters better than they do. We drive to the hole better than they do. We are more physical than them at the G positions - they are more physical in the low post.

They can beat anybody, but they've had some WTF losses. Lost by 30@ Fla.

Also, they aren't very deep. Only go 7-8 deep at most.
