When you dominate athletics it's difficult for me to say that's not athleticism. Is athleticism only jumping? Speed? It's athletics. You are an athlete. You dominate the other athletes. Jumping high or not, you must be athletic.

It's not that hard. You can be an athlete, and you can be a cerebral crafty player that's highly skilled, and sometimes you can be both.

Think of it like this: would this player do well in a decathlon? They're probably an athlete.

Wade Taylor is not a high level athlete. He's an incredibly high level player because of his skill and his craftiness.

He's the most accomplished player in our school's history and I'm not even sure he can dunk

So when he's beating the other guys down the court, dribbling at high speed, slicing through defenders and making incredible circus shots… that's craftiness not athleticism. Gotcha.

Craftiness and skill yes.

Athleticism: Speed, strength, jumping, quickness (the one Wade does have which allows him to do all the things you just mentioned)

Craftiness and/or skill: dribbling, shot making, drawing fouls, court awareness, passing ability, defensive fundamentals

I don't even think this is debatable. Wade doesn't beat guys down the court because he's faster than they are (if he could he'd finish at the basket a lot more,) he can get down the court because he can get angles with his dribbling. And he does utilize the one high level athletic attribute he does have, short burst quickness.

And I'm not saying he's unathletic, his athleticism is fine for this level. I'm saying that guys that play at the next level at his size are usually either unbelievable athletes or basically basketball savants with their shooting or passing. I mean even Steph Curry is three inches taller than Taylor is.

Fun conversation. You're the expert. I'm just an old football player and baseball coach.

I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I think it's fairly obvious in Wade's case. Obviously he's a decent athlete, he's a guard on a top 15 college basketball team. But we're comparing him to other high level players and NBA players, not all of us. I'm sure he'd look like Ja Morant on a court with forum 7 posters.

For what it's worth, in the examples made earlier I would take the crafty guy (Larry Bird and Tom Brady) over the athletic guy any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Brady is kind of an ultra rare case and QB is a unique position where your skill matters a lot more than your athleticism, although the younger generation of QBs are all great athletes too, but Bird was a superstar in college and also like 6'9. The bigger you are the less your overall athleticism matters if you're highly skilled because you can just shoot over people if you need to.

Wade is an elite athlete. Hefner is an elite athlete. Hank is an elite athlete. They're just maybe not elite of the elite athletes.

I've played with a handful of D1 and "near pro" athletes at their respective games and they are just not even close to normies.

Bobs point I think is that when you get to comparing (drafting) it gets nitpicky. It's also really hard and starts including things like game-IQ which is why so many draft picks turn bad.

You balk about whether its worth comparing statistical production between two seasons as arguing over small things but here you are penning a novel on the differences between athleticism, craftiness and skill.

Never change bob.

Why isn't Wade going to get drafted? It's because he's not very _____________. You wanna say tall which is fine.

I consider athleticism a mostly immutable trait that can be improved but only too an extent. If Wade was built and was as athletic as Quentin Jackson he'd be a first rounder. He's not.

I didn't balk at it, I just don't think it's the whole story. I also know I'm not changing your mind on it.

Well yeah. I can't let anyone else have my hills. This is serious business.

But I can say with reasonable certainty that if Wade shot 70% from 3 every game it wouldn't matter what kind of athlete he is. What a show yesterday.

Bobinator this kinda proves my debate with you. He had a great game and we barely won. So maybe it's better to be make others better around you and the whole team contributes.

If I am not mistaken every time he has a great game we either lose or barely win.

This was a different kind of good game. In some of his high scoring games he shoots an absolute ton and doesn't hit at a high rate. He still probably is the best option, but if everyone else is shooting 25% and he's shooting 30% that's not saying much.

Yesterday he scored 25 points on 11 shots, and shot 64% from the floor. If he's doing that then it would be irresponsible of him to try to get others involved just for the sake of getting others involved.

Everybody not named Wade Taylor combined to shoot 39% yesterday. Without him going absolutely nuclear we lose that game.

Wade Taylor had fun short interview post SC game. He was funny, charismatic and even sucked up to SEC broadcasters that he like their show and he watches them all the time. yea, he won that interview.
