They are and they aren't. Most officials work for a couple of conferences so in that sense, they are league affiliated just not exclusively for the one league. For league games, the SEC assigns the three officials based on who they have on their roster of approved officials. For non conference games, the teams usually agree on who does the assignments.

For the NCAA tournament, you are correct that they then are assigned by the NCAA based on evaluations and recommendations from the teams and conferences.

The other thing to add is they are not a crew like in football. The refs are assigned individually with one designated the head referee for the game. I think it is a mistake to not keep them together as a single crew but that is what college basketball has decided for a number of reasons.

Officially lost a little confidence in this squad.

We have the talent. Buzz just doesn't know how to use it or coach it. That's why we play such ugly basketball.

Foolish

The winning bucket was not a called play by the coach. What I will give him credit for is some brilliant substitutions down the stretch and not calling a timeout to set up the last shot. He just let his players create. That was genius.

Your comment had nothing to do with the winning bucket. It was about Buzz Williams in general. People who say Buzz is not a good coach have no credibility. Every single former coach, analyst and studio host raves about Buzz's coaching. For you to think you know better than them is laughable.

My opinion of his coaching acumen is nothing more than that. Does he win more than he loses absolutely. I probably should have said his style is sometimes not conducive to coaching his current talent to the ultimate prize. He is definitely an above average defensive and rebounding coach. In all of his stops he has struggled to coach offense. But, I would love him to prove me foolish before his tenure at A&M ends. Even better if it is this season.

The ugly basketball is a feature of the system, not a bug. You seem to think he's taking elite talent and hindering their abilities as offensive playmakers. The truth is that he's taking good talent and using a style of play that can beat elite talent. We will never consistently bring elite players to A&M.

We have had coaches who previously brought superior talent to A&M. What is it about Buzz that can't bring elite talent to A&M. Just actually curious as to your opinion.

When have we ever consistently brought highly-recruited nationally prominent players to A&M?

Learned something. I figured with 2 games a week, they probably stuck with the same conference, but I guess it's possible some of these guys are calling 4-5 a week? Anyone know an NCAA basketball official?

Me. Had one work for me as a financial analyst. NCAA officiating is tough and most work only a couple games a week. It's too much travel and BS. There are only a few of dozens that make it a full time job.

Payne, Obaseki, and Washington are elite talent, imo. Maybe not elite players, but any coach would welcome their athletic ability.

I've never seen better athletes in A&M uniforms. Maybe the 1980 squad was comparable for its time.

I think Buzz believes he has elite qualities in his players, just ones that don't always translate to the offensive side of the ball. And our "better" offensive shooters such as Hef/Wilcher have limitations on defense (Payne also in that regard). What Buzz cultivates is a mindset and fire in his team, and belief at some level. I think with different players we could look prettier, but that's not who we have on the team right now.

Turgeon and Kennedy had a 12 year run of pretty elite players come through. Maybe not all one and done but, definitely elite.

Outside of that one freshman class of Gilder/Davis/Hogg/Thomas the recruiting hasn't been much different than prior, some guys just ended up being better their ranking like caruso and sloan

Even Robert Williams was a three star. So yeah we've hit on some talented guys that werent big time recruits but we are kinda doing the same now. Wade, solo, Phelps we're all good recruits but not necessarily elite

While I somewhat agree. Short of Wade, those teams had far superior talent. They just didn't always play to their paper. On defense, this current team plays far above each players individual talent. The part of basketball Buzz excels at coaching.
