I feel like many on here need to watch other teams more. Bad offensive basketball is the name of the game for 90% of college basketball.

That was a great win and a good blueprint on how we can beat other good teams.

We were ranked #341 in FG% last year at 45.7%.

We shot 36.5% against UCF, but many wanted to downplay it because it was without Payne.

We shot 38.8% last night, with Payne.

It's silly at this point to act like our offense isn't bad.

Our offense isn't efficient from a shooting perspective, but I wouldn't call it bad. How can you look at FG% without factoring in our offensive rebound %? It's clearly been a motivating factor in how we get "easier" shots.

Yes I should have clarified. We are a well above average offensive rebounding team.

But we don't take good shots, and we don't hit shots at a very high clip. Our goal is to get to the line, or get put-back buckets.

We win rock fights. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd say it definitely produces a low NCAA tournament ceiling.

If we hit shots at even a slightly-below-average clip, we'd potentially be an elite team.

consistent offensive identity

When has A&M ever had this?

It's been statistically efficient because of our offense rebounding, three point shooting (which has been unusually good so far) and (especially last night) our ability to get fouled. Last night we were willing to take some bad twos and be reckless at times because we were getting fouled at such a high rate, will be interesting over these next couple of weeks to see if that evolves any.

It certainly doesn't exactly look like poetry in motion out there.

I have no problem with our offense. We must remember that Phelps has only been practicing for like a week now, he's probably still rusty and learning to play with the other guys.

As long as we keep shooting threes like this then I'm not concerned, but given our history on that front our ability to generate good looks closer to the basket is at least a mild worry.

Like Joe said, we can win a lot of games without it, but we could win a whole lot of games with it.

4 games in I normally wouldn't have too much worry about our offense.

But our FG% ranking under Buzz has been:

#312
#278
#195
#264
#341

At this point it's rather silly to act like "when these guys mesh" or "when we get this guy back" or "if so and so were 100%".

Buzz' offenses revolve around drawing fouls and crashing boards, not getting clean looks (and having players that make those clean looks). Elite offenses can do all three. That's why we are in rock fight after rock fight after rock fight.

I don't hate it... it allows you to sometimes hang with teams that are significantly more talented than you are (while also allowing teams less talented than you to hang around way too long). But it also -- in my opinion -- creates a ceiling on how far you can realistically go in the tournament.

That ceiling can be really high if you play defense at a high level and rebound offensive boards at an elite level though. Basically what Houston has been doing, our defense just hasn't been as good as theirs but it's looking a lot better this year so far.

Houston's FG% isn't great, but at worst it's competent.

Like I said, we can get away with relying on offensive boards and getting to the line, but to be elite we have to shift from a horrible shooting team to a slightly below average shooting team. Not good, not even average. Just not horrible.

I think we could survive a pretty bad overall FG% if we can keep shooting threes at a high percentage but I'm definitely dubious of that being the case given our history.

I agree with the concerns, I'm just not overly worried about it yet. We'll see in a couple weeks I guess.

Field goal shooting percentage is certainly an important statistic, but it is not the only measure of an offense.

In team offensive efficiency, we were ranked 54th out of 362 ranked teams. 25th out of 362 in Floor % (% if offensive possessions in which the team scores). 95th out of 362 in scoring margin (which measures defense as well).

Your data shows we are a bad shooting percentage team. Measuring an offense overall includes more data than shooting percent and the other number paint the picture of a well above average offense when it comes to productivity.
