UNC in its 4th season with Hubert Davis. Counting this season, 2 entire seasons without a single quality win. One season with a month-long heater after 4 months of blah. One season with a #2 seed and a sweet 16 exit. That National Championship appearance is obscuring the fact that he is much closer to Matt Doherty than people realize - they've got 3 5-stars, and the school's #2 all-time scorer, on the court, and they look awful most nights.

They had a 15 point lead at halftime in the final, too. Then they tried to run it back with the same group, and fell completely flat. Zero quad 1 wins the entire season. Almost impossible to comprehend either extreme. They went in and dunked Coach K in his final home game, then faced them again for the first time ever in the tourney, and sent him packing forever. It was the ultimate all-time bragging rights moment, and I was there in New Orleans for it.

But hating Duke isn't enough to build a program on.

Despite the talent, that roster has some serious deficiencies. They have virtually no rebounding or inside scoring presence, which has actually been true for several years, despite Bacot's best efforts.

One thing to add...the final 4 run was mostly attributable to Caleb Love. When he came back and tried to be a volume 3 point shooter, things really cratered. They also lost OU transfer Brady Manek, whose value was vastly underrated. They have missed terribly in the portal since then (you may remember them taking Okonkwo out from under the Ags, but he never even saw the court).

The further you get from the great coach, the more the cracks show. The assistant can keep the train on the track for a while sometimes but they aren't the same person and will eventually go south unless they're bringing in their own ideas and continuing to innovate and develop.

Scheyer seems to get it. I was skeptical of him too but I think he's brought some new juice to that program. Those recruits help obviously, but still.

Ha, yeah, Duke had 50 options, but went with Scheyer. Looks good so far...but there's almost no right answer for either program.

And yeah ,UNC looks like a caricature of Roy Williams' program. They play just as fast, but with guards who can't shoot, bigs who can't rebound, and wings who can't execute the secondary break.

Houston absolutely destroying Utah. 15-0 run in 4 mins.

Hopefully no cardiac COOGS tonight.

People always underestimated how much coaching there was in that system under Williams. There's a reason it looked easy but almost nobody else ever did it quite as well.

South Carolina gonna get this one? I'd hate to be a bubble team and draw them late in the year.

Florida will win but SC has been really good so far. Hope I'm wrong.

Agree but I think they wear down in the second half.

Yeah Florida is probably too much but three of their last five are Georgia, Missouri and Texas.

They're a good example of the thing pure metrics don't catch. There is a degree of skill in winning close games.

Though some luck like that helps.
