I don't get the point of people losing their mind over a close loss on the road in the first game of the season.

We're gonna be really good, but it's gonna take some time, especially until Phelps comes back.

Payne is going to have to play smarter, he's way too important offensively to foul out.

Rough week for TX born Aggies . Aggie Football gets blown out. Cowboys are trash. Texans lose to garbage Jets.

Its all reactionary

Not the end of the world, but with the amount of returning experience, you would have expected to have played better.

UCF is a pretty new roster and had key players out. I get the frustration.

You don't think people can be frustrated by blowing a 9 pt lead late in the 2nd half? This wasn't some back and forth slugfest where they just happened to make a few more shots. We melted down.

I think it's just so infuriating because it was so predictable. We were all hoping to avoid the sluggish start for the first time in too long. Hopefully it's just a blunder and not a commonality like the last few years. I want a a comfortable seed for once

It was a bad loss, reacting strongly to that I get.

Extrapolating it to "we suck this year", not so much.

However, it is concerning to watch us lose that game with this roster, even minus Phelps.

You can be frustrated but it's gonna happen. We're going to have opponents blow huge leads, we're going to blow huge leads, players are going to do dumb stuff, it's college basketball.

Payne and Phelps are the guys that are supposed to cover our problems from last year (and replace Radford's production.). One of them isn't playing and the other had a good game but the fouled out which is about when our total collapse started.

Still had four pretty good looks in the last minute of the game to tie or take the lead, but tonight they didn't fall. Some other night they will.

I will be surprised if we aren't closer to a 5 than a 9.

This.

It was was a Q1 opportunity at the beginning of the year for a team ranked Top 15 preseason due to the experience it was bringing back.

There's a few on this board who have morphed into this "elevated" fan where losses aren't really that bad you just think that because you don't follow closely. We've been to the tournament twice in 6 years, both with a first weekend exit. Talking about losses not mattering is what's foolish.

What is frustrating to me is the same issues that have plagued our team are still there.
Bad ball handling, turnovers due to no true point guard.
Open 3's for opponents
Bad free throws
Long non scoring streaks

Nothing in these areas have improved the entire time Buzz has been here.

You can be frustrated but also not think this loss is that bad. Nobody is saying people should be happy about it or anything.

It's the folks acting like losing an opening night road game to UCF is on par with losing a home game to Wofford or that awful Arkansas team last year that are off the deep end.

Maybe we need a TexAgs panic scale and we can all vote after each game. For me this was like a 3/10 panic loss.

Buzz seems to create basketball role players. He's done a great job at coaching hustle and offensive boards. We have a team of Dennis Rodmans but now we need some of them to morph into Scottie Pippens.
Give me the guy who shoots for excellence and fails over the guy who shoots for mediocrity and succeeds.

I was more happy than sad. Payne is gonna be massive for us which is what I wanted to see

My one disappointment was I had hoped Solo would take the next step offensively and really give us a boost offensively. I'm talking 12-14 nightly. It's one game but it looked like he's the exact same player

Solo has missed some practice. He's also playing a lot of SF which I like. Let's see where he is come start of SEC play. I think he's going to do well, but need him to not foul so much.

I hope so. It's very possible with these key guys missing practice with injuries, starting the season at Houston and at UCF while other teams play Lamar wasnt the best idea

At least last year we play a gimmie game before Ohio state. True road game night one is tough

I like the panic scale. I'll admit though, this one has me at a 6/10.

Mostly I'm worried about how this offense will come together. With Manny playing sparingly in the offense, we had almost no dribble drive presence.

I have learned under Buzz to not expect the team to have a 'fast start' to the season…the closet we came to that seemed last season…but it sure would be nice if once in awhile he did that. Where the team simply looked really good right out of the gate and racked up a lot of non-con quality wins.

I agree. Payne looked awesome last night. It was great to have a big presence down low, and I'm excited to see how he'll add to last year's best offensive rebounding team in the country!

Haven't seen Phelps since the A&M-SMU game last year, but if everyone on here is to be believed, he'll be a great addition as well. It's a long season. Plenty of wins on deck for the Ags.

When Phelps came to Reed Arena two years ago, he was the best guard on the court and at that time it wasn't close

I'm not mad about losing, but we felt very in control with 5 mins or so mins left. We just choked it. Thats frustrating.

Didn't get to watch, just listened to the game. Based on that, it seemed to me we had a lot of opportunity to put them away and just couldn't do it but we just kept sending them to the line over and over. Fine line between aggressive defense and letting them shoot freebies over and over with the clock stopped.

At least we did get into control? I think from a down-the-road standpoint I'd be more concerned if we just looked terrible the whole game, but I mostly liked how we looked. We looked big and athletic, something we haven't been in a long time.

The things we were bad at late were things we'll get better at. We let the officiating get to us and got frustrated.

Only long-term concern for me from that game was Manny. I know he's a volatile player anyway, but man, that was bad.

I'm just hoping that this is the one game that we lose early that wasn't expected which will be made up for late in the season with a win we weren't expecting. Looked pretty typical for an early season Buzz' team. Looked like we didn't really have a plan to play as a team at all. The last 7-8 minutes of the game were typical Aggie basketball. Frustrating to see year after year but after this many years, we should all expect it by now.

This was always a losable game though, especially without Pehlps, it's not in that same tier of some of our truly bad losses. We were favored, but this in a group of games that I'd call "favored, but losable" with Ohio State, Oregon and maybe SDSU.

I'd put our non-con as:

Slight underdogs, but can win: Creighton, Tech, Purdue (want to win two, winning one is acceptable)
Favored, but losable: UCF, Ohio State, Oregon, SDSU, Wake (want to win four, winning three is acceptable)
Disaster losses: Everyone else

"Want" would mean this team has a chance to be elite, "acceptable" meaning we're about on track with what most of us expected.

Wake is probably just barely a "favored, but losable" game and would probably be closer to a disaster loss, but they're so much better than the other disaster losses that it seems weird to put them there.

Until I see Phelps on the court, I don't like this group. I don't see how the offense scores without having Wade and/or Phelps penetrating. Plus, there aren't any shooters to space the floor. In my opinion, you need a WTF player like Heff or Wilcher or Jace playing in the lineup that can at least hit a 3 every so often to keep the defense honest.

In that last play, Wade didn't have anywhere to go because we either didn't put a guy or he sagged to the paint (which is a no-no bc you bring your guy with you). We needed somebody there in the short corner as an outlet for when Wade gets caught up in the paint.

I see the void that Boots left, while he got his shot blocked a ton in the paint, he always found a way to twist his way to the bucket. He was also an elite rebounder for a guy his size. We missed that yesterday. This is why I said that in order for us to do well, we needed to have late season Manny.

I've really liked Hefner's grit and determination over the years. That being said, the offense was noticeably stagnant when he was in the game. Every touch he had the defense expanded as if they knew not to respect him and they are right unfortunately.
