Wasn't that BuzzFan's question in the first place?

I only saw the "prospect" part but I see now at the end he mentioned possibly being on some draft boards as a late 2nd rounder. I think Rodman probably would qualify there. Not a first rounder and not a guaranteed pick.

Yes. NBA loves great defenders. They draft them and hope they can teach them to make open threes.
This. You more or less have two categories players in the NBA: Creators and "other guys". The other guys are expected to play defense and hit open threes (unless they're an elite rim protector). You can't teach athleticism, but you suprisingly can teach a lot of guys to shoot. So you take really athletic guys that can defend multiple positions and hope you can teach them how to shoot.

I don't think he has it, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him in the NBA down the road.

The NFL is similar with drafting QBs in the late rounds. There are very few people in the world that have the arm strength to make the throws they need to make, so that's criteria #1 at that point above actually being good at the position. So you draft the guy and hope they can figure it out, knowing they probably won't.
Thats how the Cowboys got Romo and Dak…but with intention of them starting not as projects.

I'll note in my mind lottery is starters, bottom of the 1st usually starts, 2nd is risky need or character guy, or project. There are two kinds of athleticism of course…height is one of them …

Dennis went to two colleges _I_ hadn't heard of…and during the season we had snarky comments about comparisons of him to Solo. I have no clue if an extremely gifted rebounder will fit into today's NBA game.

I think Solo needs a private coach to clean up his shooting if he wants to make it to the NBA. G League won't give him enough individual instruction on shooting but will teach him to work even harder. But more fun to come in as a draft choice even second round.

I hope those seniors turn into graduates or we will have a mighty inexperienced group.

They can't. The last of the covid years are done. Carter, Obaseki, Garcia and Phelps are all done after this year also.

Gonna be a major roster overhaul next year for sure but we're adding some nice pieces.

Andre Mills and George Turkson should get minutes early in the year against lesser opponents. I'd be surprised if either of them broke out this year and were serious contributors. They will be those players in the future, but likely not this season. There's too much veteran depth ahead of them. I'm very high on Mills and would love to see him contribute this year but i'm keeping my hopes neutral with how many guys are more experienced.

Wade Taylor IV
Zhuric Phelps
Manny Obaseki
Solomon Washington
Pharrel Payne

That's my best prediction, but you know how Buzz is, he always has one or two guys that you would not expect in the starting lineup to start the year. I still remember last year when Hefner started some games lol. Would not shock me at all to see Jace Carter or Henry Coleman crack the lineup, but in my mind those five up there are your best five with Garcia first off the bench.

Yeah it's as likely to be Taylor/Manny/Hef/Solo/Coleman or something wild

We should guess worst five in late season rotation taking into account injuries and regression age predict what wurst five in floor is while extended bench is rotating in.

I'm forced to agree. Nothing against HH(he is a fan favorite after all) but this team is so deep that he should not be playing unless he can shoot close to 40%.

It's his defense that really scares me, he's an absolute liability and it's so obvious that when he's on the court teams will run an iso because whoever he's guarding will clearly get to the lane. On offense he hustles but doesn't shoot at a great clip and doesn't have the size to score inside…

although he'll have at least 1-2 games where he can't miss from downtown and scores at least 15 points… but not worth the amount he plays lol

I always hoped he'd bulk up and became a guy that was more of a stretch four than a wing three like a Walkup or Jalen Jones but that didn't happen. He's got good rebounding instincts and could be an offensive weapon at the high post and on the wing and his lack of quickness wouldn't be as big of an issue but at his weight he can't hold up in there defensively.

a lineup with Andersson Garcia, Henry Coleman, and Jace Carter off the bench is pretty scary

There are starters and then there are minutes.

I am mostly concerned with minutes. Coach seemed to be generous last season with minutes being spread between 9-10 players… am I making that up?

I don't know if that was just an adjustment due to Marbles' absence. Garcia seems the first off the bench and Jace was the 3rd option behind Taylor and MO. Not sure what happened to Coleman to lose him starting position, but his minutes took a hit last season.

My question is: You have 200 minutes of playing time where do they go?

It will depend on the night I think. Who is playing well. What the matchups are

Coleman also got hurt. He was definitely hurt once and I think he was hurt twice though they never publicly talked about the second one as far as I know. He missed the next two games after the South Carolina game, and when he came back he only played 9 minutes and 5 minutes in the two Ole Miss games before starting to ramp back up.

But we both did and didn't play a lot of guys last season.

What I mean is at PG/SG we basically had a two man show with very few breaks. Boots and Taylor played 33 minutes a game.

But on the wing we had a revolving door of Carter, Hefner, and Manny. Hefner and Manny were so bad for a while that Carter was also playing over 30 mins a game. The three spot was an absolute hole for us for a big chunk of the season, and it was compounding issue in that not only did we not get any production from that spot, but Boots and Taylor also got worn down. Phelps is obviously going to play a lot of minutes, but there's a lot of minutes that can be spread around the backcourt if we have reliable options.

I liked our rotation in the front court though, if you take out the games that Coleman was hurt then Garcia, Solo and Coleman all played between around 20-25 minutes a game. You can shave off a few minutes a game from each of them, especially Garcia who ended up playing over 28 minutes a game last year, factor in that Solo will also be getting minutes on the wing, and add in Leveque's 10 mins a game and you can easily find 20+ minutes for Payne. That should keep everyone fresh.

Related, but I think Coleman is going to have a really good year. He's better than a lot of our fans realize. Said this last year but he's a Robin that didn't have a Batman last season. There's a reason that the better Marble got, the better Coleman was, and now Payne should be able to provide that.

We did have a glaring lack of production from the wing last year. It really only ever felt good once MO started playing at a high level late and we ran three small guards.

I agree, I liked the front court rotation when healthy - and would've loved it with an offensive front court weapon that was lacking (thank you Marbles). The way Buzz likes to dominate the glass, it'll be fun watching him cycle these guys around and hoping to maximize their energy levels on the glass and sprinting the court. Honestly, we probably have 4 starters in the front court (Coleman, Garcia, Payne, and Solo).

I think I'd push back on Manny being "small" but he's definitely faster than the other two. Carter and Hefner are both listed at 6-6 compared to Manny's 6-4 but I think I'd argue he plays bigger than both of him because he's a much better athlete. I actually wondered at times last season if Manny should play the four in certain situations. He can shoot decently well from the high post.

But Manny's big problem a lot of the times is he's an absolutely terrible passer off the bounce. He's going to have to do better at that this year if he's going to play 20+ minutes for a full season because opponents are going to adjust to how he drives the ball.

I do think if Buzz had it to do over he'd probably let Manny loose a little earlier in the season and just see what happens. I think he probably underestimated how much better the charge rule change would make his driving ability.

Hank absolutely dominated some games last year when healthy. It should surprise no one for him to have a good year

Wasn't always a positive result with the couple of games when his free throw shooting was a nightmare. Hope he continues with the slightly better shooting during the tourney runs.

I was hoping Manny would become Q, part 2 as the athleticism for both made them so electric. If he can have a senior season like Q, I would be ecstatic.

this is my favorite basketball! I love a double post game, especially with two big guys who can share the ball! I'm not sure what Payne brings in that regard but it would be nice to see!!!
