Not sure why - as I am no recruiting guru or skilled evaluator of talent- but I have a feeling that this kid is going to come through for us and end up being a significant contributor to the Aggies over his college basketball career.

I agree with an earlier poster that if McDermott and Lee can hang in there, develop and be patient, that the mass of departures expected after next season due to expiring eligibility should free up scholarships for both walk-ons.

We're running back a very senior-laden roster next year, assuming no more unannounced departures. For a guy like McDermott who is in-state and sounds like he's got a solid academic resume, a combination of some academic scholarship funds and a a relative sprinkling of NIL would probably still have him coming out ahead for a year.

I'd imagine Buzz asked him to come in as a PWO, work his tail off, and then laid out how he's setting himself up for a scholly in '25 onwards to be a contributor. Sounds like McDermott was obviously game for that, which is a great way to squeeze in a guy who balled out at Peach Jam and obviously dominated the Houston scene.

Agree completely.

FWIW I finally saw a report of his "commitment" on an online publication unrelated to TexAgs. STILL not sure why 247 doesn't show him as an Aggie recruit (listed in player rankings as #146 - but no school listed).

Again - I'm hoping he shows up, works hard and becomes a contributor!

Doesn't make sense why at top 150 or even 200, why he doesn't have ANY other legit bball offers.

Seems peculiar.

Recruiting is not a strong point with the current staff.

Are A&M's core values..optional? Who has the POWER to determine that? Are certain departments exempt? Why?

That's a weird response to us getting the Houston players of the year to come to A&M as a walkon. But all of your posts are weird so I get it.

Yeah, one look at this guy's posting history was more than enough for me to decide not to care

His playoff prowess has been well-documented, and he tends to elevate his game against tougher competition. Grayson pointed to a non-district contest against Pennsylvania's Archbishop Wood at the King Cotton Classic in Arkansas in December. Wood was led by McDonald's All-American and Miami signee Jalil Bethea, but McDermott led Washington to a 79-77 victory with 25 points, 28 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

Looks like he will get a chance to continue to elevate his game against tougher competition.

I know "you can't do this" but, just for fun, take the stat line (7 rebounds, 5 points, 2 assists) from his his 13 min of play and multiply it by 2 or 3 - and you start getting numbers like he had in high school.

Other notable quotes from this old thread: "led the State of Texas in tebounding".

And based on recent interviews on TexAgs - Buzz said he "Loves him some MacDee" or a nickname somewhere along those lines.

I nominated him after his FIRST appearance for DAWG (somewhat tongue in cheek) because of how comfortable this true Fish looked on the floor with the older veteran players - and the fact that he scored and got rebounds in his first playing time - but I think this kid looks like he might develop into a real option off the bench THIS YEAR.

BTHO t.u.!!!

Agree. He looks ready to contribute right now. We know from past experience Buzz doesn't tend to throw freshman into the mix but apparently McDermott is simply too far along to keep on the bench. He looks the part as well, legs look more senior like than freshman like.

I have wondered why UH didn't seem to make a big run at him? His offer list was good ( Ole Miss, Memphis ... among others) but didn't seem like UH was pursuing him very hard. Maybe he was not interested and he told them so, I dunno. When he announced he was coming here a reporter asked him why it took him so long to make a decision. His answer (paraphrased) ... it didn't take me long to make a decision I just didn't want to announce before the hs season was over.

I hope this is legit.

Kid sounds nice in the interview someone posted. His academic credentials, if true, appear to show evidence of ability to work hard - I mean, to rank near the top of your class in spite of the grind of AAU/EYBL and varsity practice and games is pretty impressive.

Could this be a case of Buzz's extreme loyalty to everyone else on scholarship - especially the veteran players that have been through the grind with him and the team at A&M these last 4 years (I'm specifically thinking of Hefner) that he could not free up a final scholarship spot (after dedicating the three he did have to incoming portal transfers thst were ultimately available once our younger portal transfers, like Lindsay, had elected to move on) for this kid and "execute" what appears to have been one of the earliest scholarship offers he had?

I sincerely hope that might be the case - and that the theories put forward by others on this thread that this kid can get some NIL money to help bridge the gap allows what appears to be a smart, genuine and clearly talented young man to supplement a very small incoming freshman recruiting class this year - and perhaps develop into the next Solo Washington!

Gig'em!

Not sure that it really matters at this point, but it did seem like much of the discussion of this player earlier in the year related to why it appeared TexAgs (and other sites) were slow to even consider the importance of his commitment or even documenting it in the same way other commits to Texas A&M in the 2024 Class. Many postulated that McDermott was a PWO rather than a scholarship player - and that this could be the reason.

Anybody know now whether that is in fact the case?

I did think it was fun near the end of the ACU game that Chris was one of the players on the floor doing their best to pass the ball in order to get another shot for an older (?former?) PWO, Jaelyn Lee, who was also on the floor as time was running out. Not sure if Jaelyn is on scholarship now or not.

I don't know but it doesn't make any sense to me that a guy with McDermott's accolades and hs stats wouldn't be on scholarship and from what little I have seen he can clearly play. As others have said , he had numerous offers elsewhere with good programs albeit maybe not an offer list you'd expect for a Houston area player of the year .

I think it's just the two us on this discussion.

I agree. With only nonconference schedule having been completed, and realizing that the other fish might not have had an opportunity to play at all secondary to their not really having a guard spot or other position to play in YET due to all the older players ahead of them, McDermott (thus far) appears to the the star of the 2024 recruiting class.

He SHOULD be on an athletic scholarship.

But, again, perhaps NIL has made scholarships an old fashioned construct that is unnecessary in these times.
