Buzz's contract and possible extension

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I've seen on multiple threads people making comments about needing to give him an extension. I just don't understand this thinking. My understanding is that he has two years left on his original 6 year contract. It seems to me that we should wait at least another year before any sort of contract extension.

I've seen the argument that it needs to be done for recruiting purposes. With kids being able to leave whenever they want via the transfer portal, I don't think that argument holds any water anymore.

Buzz is a top ten paid coach who hasn't once delivered top ten type of results. Other than it's what Aggies do (Jimbo Fisher), why would we want to saddle ourselves with an extension prematurely?

some are scared Tech is gonna come steal him away so they want to up his deal

I'm sure we'll give him a raise and extension for this year. We over award underachievement

The interesting thing is we haven't seen how Bjork handles a big time contract. He let Evans and Childress run out the clock. I would be shocked if they do that with Buzz.

You don't think an undeserving coach should be given a ridiculous extension? Welcome to Texas A&M athletics.

We need to hire better contract lawyers.

I'd love if we stopped giving crazy sums of guaranteed money and instead threw in some ridiculous money as bonus incentives for winning

What he gets paid is irrelevant. Buzz Williams is literally the only coach in the country who could conceivably command a top 10 salary that would actually take the job at Texas A&M. Pretty much the only reason he's here is because he wanted to be here. Firing or letting Buzz Williams walk doesnt equal hiring Mick Cronin or some nonsense, it means taking a flyer on someone else who hasnt done anything yet and hoping and praying or doing something dumb (and yet would have been lauded by this message board a few years ago) like hiring a guy like Avery Johnson and wasting a **** ton of money.

Would be such an aggie thing to give him a 5 year 30 mill extension after never winning a tourney game while at A&M

I'm not saying he is, BUT we have fans that think it and will want us to "pay him anything he wants" to stay.

No, his pay is relevant. We're paying him a top ten salary and he hasn't delivered so far. It doesn't mean we fire him today, but we sure as hell shouldn't give him an extension this year.

Ask Buzz for a refund on everything you've paid him out of your pocket then.

That's we have an AD. In theory they should be smart enough to not extend a contract until he's earned it.

I could easily be mistaken, however I believe Buzz would agree he hasn't earned a raise and would refuse one. He comes across as that sort of person.

Absolutely no reason to extend at this time. These discussions need to happen a year from now.

Buzz was a splash hire but it just hasn't worked out. A&M will never fire a coach that just made the tournament, but what is the decision if he doesn't win a tournament game in 2024?

With that said, he'll likely get a 4yr extension sometime next month.

So are you a comptroller in real life? If not: see previous post on why it's irrelevant and quit trolling.

I would give extension of 2-3 years but no raise. Let's see what he can do with some returning talent.

Sometimes in the world of sports, which is not real life, when your location is not of the Blue Blood variety, it is necessary to pay a Top 10 salary to get Top 25 results.

If the goal is to get him up leave, don't raise or extend him and go fund our next Watkins or Davis hire…

Buzz gets us, though...

Seriously, I like Buzz--he's underwhelmed here so far, no doubt, but what he took over and the Covid mess he has had to deal with whole turning this thing around probably has earned him a few more years. Giving him 2-3 more years is probably a good call. He's a good coach, loves being here, and won't do anything to embarrass you off the court. Probably wouldn't give him a raise, but I think he will continue to build this thing in the right direction. No reason he cannot get the program to at least where BCG and BK got us in their tenures.

Buzz is world class, has our guys believing in his system, and before last night, could easily have had a deep deep run in this tourney. They played the one team who was on fire and executed their very unique game plan flawlessly. It happens, and not a lot of teams would have performed against that Penn State team last night. I'm as upset as the next guy, but I would sign Buzz as long as he'd be willing to stay. He is all class and does things right. The results come if you put in the hard work, and future squads will do well if they buy into his system early. Thanks to the team for this year's performance, especially since January, as it is obviously more fun when we are winning. I support the Aggies, Buzz and any contract extensions we want to offer. Gig Em and God Bless...

You must have helped in the in the Jimbo negotiations. Buzz hasn't produced in line with his pay. If he chooses to walk due to not getting an extension, I'm guessing we can live with that.

How successful can a system be if it takes 4 years to install and then gets destroyed in the first round.

What happens if there is bunch of turnover, so we have to go another 4 years for him to rebuilt?

He is overpaid due to our job being extremely unattractive to both players and coaches. I think he's changing that, and that is what the pay is for.

This should be the norm, because if a coach wont bet on himself, why should we? and why would any recruit loking for a winner?

You can blame the committee, he should have had a chance at winning a game last year. He should have been playing a 12 or 13 seed this year. That game last night sucked and I'm not sure we'll ever play a game again where the other team is over 70% from 3 with 5 minutes to go but that's why the screw job mattered.

I'm not saying Buzz is on the hot seat (though it is warming) but I also think it would be ridiculous to extend him because of some fear a Top 10 program will pay him MORE to be their coach

At the very least we need to see how next year goes.
