Beard will leave Tech the first chance he gets offered something better. Hell, he wasn't at UNLV for 3 weeks before he bolted from there and he's been the head coach at 5 different schools over the last 7 seasons. He's nothing if not upwardly mobile.

And we're not gonna Pay a basketball coach out of that anyway. That goes to operations, paying for Kyle, scholarships, Small sports, etc

Boosters pay the basketball coach, and I don't see us paying $4 million when we are throwing the bank at the football program right now

Tech has as much basketball history in the last 30 years as anyone else in the state (some of that is Women's).
They show up and support and are relatively patient .

Their early 90's teams with Dicky were fun to watch.
Bobby Knight had some good teams, last year and now this year.

I understand his 3 daughters are in Lubbock and his current girlfriend is there. I expect he will try to stay there for another 5 years or so.

Hypothetically if the Austin job opens up down the road and they offered Beard, it would probably surprise a lot of people if he didn't take it.

UT and A&M may be the state's football flagship universities, but not in basketball. Tech is the best basketball job in the state right now, and Beard will stick around until he's done what he came to do.

Tadlock is a Texas Tech alum. Chris Beard is a horn alum. I'm sure you are right that he loves West Texas, but if the horns came calling, it seems like it would be an interesting decision for him.

Beard has a GREAT thing going at a place he has essentially called home the past 20 years. He's got a great fanbase for basketball, he's earning great money, and he is making his mark on HIS program, in a community where he can be a big deal.

I just don't see him giving all that up to be second, or even third fiddle in a place he hasn't really been a part of in decades, unless they make him a lucrative offer (which they won't be in a position to do).

Horns maybe have to suffer through about 3 more Shaka seasons to get that buyout down enough to even be in some kind of feasible new 'godfather' offer position.

I don't think any rational person thinks the horns can untie themselves from Shaka anytime soon. When I was mentioning Beard, I was wondering longer term down the road what would happen if Austin aggressively pursued him.

Likely depends on how he's being treated in Lubbock. He's proven he can get elite talent, so that won't be the reason he leaves. Hes proven he can win the league. Next we'll see if he can get to a Final Four.

If he's being paid well and treated like a king, why would he leave? Same reason Mark Few isn't the coach at Oregon.

I do think history says it is easier to consistently recruit future NBA talent level guys to Austin instead of Lubbock. From what you said, perhaps that sort of factor would be totally irrelevant to Beard.

When it was mentioned that Tech was a better basketball job, that was one counterpoint thst came to mind. I think the recruiting ceiling is higher at Texas. The horns is a better job if you like trying to grab guys that have blue-blood school offers.

History would agree but Beard just landed Terrence Shannon today. Tech had zero 4 star players the 5 years prior to Beard. Beard has 4 alone in the 2019 class (2 National top 100s, the #1 Juco transfer).

Tech is now #2 in Big 12 Recruiting (yes, barely behind UT) and #14 nationally (Texas is #12)

Beard is getting top notch national talent into Lubbock.
