How many hours do you think a Chinese must work to earn a few hundred dollars?

The upper-middle class has been exploding in number for several years in China. These are the factory OWNERS and bankers working in free economic zones. Given the population size there if even %5 has disposable income like that, then that is still a huge market.

Shoplifting in China can bring up to 10 years in prison. These guys are just plain stupid!

Being reported that Trump asked the President of China to help with the situation. Will be interesting if it becomes a political bargaining chip.

That makes sense. Lavar and Donald have a lot in common, mainly that Gelo Ball is the Eric Trump of the Ball kids.

What BS...would any other American merit the president getting involved? (In ANY way whatsoever...)

If I was asking China for help in a matter, how far would this be down the list.

Is this a NCAA violation?

Did these players receive an extra benefit because of their status as basketball players?

Heard on the news this morning that it is very common for foreigners to be held for a week or 2 and then be required to apologize and pay a fine. So, it seems that they are not being treated differently, especially for a foreigner that is in a higher profile position.

Will be interesting to see how UCLA handles this once the players are back in the US.

Well, it's certain they considered their status to come with extra "benefits"!

They just need to learn to commit likely felonies in the USA!

In the stores they were "shopping" in, it would be extremely difficult to take anything without it being considered a felony in the US. Of course, I suspect taking a pencil in China is a likely felony.

At the end of the day, we are all human and no one is more frustrated than we are. We are working everyday to be better... Let’s go back to being Aggie fans instead of acting like opposing team fans. Let’s do better.

Suspended indefinitely, but Coach Alford said "They'll have to earn their way back."

They outta be expelled. Maybe they can go play at a JC somewhere and then transfer back to another D1 program. Bad publicity already and it would get worse if they somehow play for UCLA this year.

Overboard? They embarrassed the university on an international stage. The president of the United States got involved for crying out loud. Expelling them should be a given.

Because trump likes to stick it to you when you screw up. Three future thugs robbed 3 stores in china and got caught. They got off very light. They should show a little humility and respect to the man that instrumental in getting them off. What did barackenheimer always say? "It was a teachable moment"!

Is this Ball (don't really care to learn which one is which) going to stay for more than this season? And the youngest is likely to be ineligible anyway with his shoe deal. The Balls will have minimal long term impact on UCLA basketball.

My line of thinking is that if they wouldn't be expelled for trying to steal something in LA or some other US city, they shouldn't be expelled for trying to steal something overseas. Agree that the story is not a good look for the kids or the university.

I don't think the current Ball is good enough to go pro. Not sure what will happen with the kid in HS, but I don't think the UCLA is looking for ways to alienate a current 5-star commit or a former player who is their biggest name in the NBA.

Agreed. If UCLA expelled Ball, no telling what daddy would say. He would have ZERO allegiance to UCLA, and would probably start throwing out stuff that UCLA probably doesn't want out there.

I just think that the crime being committed in China does make it way worse and deserves a much stiffer punishment.

Could be like Uli G. and his messup. They will probably get booed and have obscenities yelled at them on the court if they continue to play for UCLA. Distraction for the team.....

But.....Uli ended up with a ring.

1) Get kicked out of school.
2) Get sold by father to highest bidder.
3) Win Player of the year at new school.
4) Profit.

But enough about Cam Newton...

If the 3 players who missed the Tarleton St game due to violations of university policy had instead done something dumb overseas last week, you'd be advocating that they be kicked off the basketball team and expelled from A&M?

Part of why this was as big a story as it was is China's authoritarian regime that cracks down hard on their population in ways that's aren't acceptable in the West. We shouldn't be ramping up their punishment because China has a poor human rights record.

That said, they definitely did a poor job representing UCLA at an important time and they proved UCLA has some pretty dumb basketball players. Still, would we feel particularly negative if this happened in some western country without a harsh regime? I still think it comes down to China's backwards government.

As far as China's view of the United States or what this means to Sino-American relations or something, I doubt it's even a blip on the radar, no matter how much Trump may or may not try to play it up.
