They outta be expelled.
That seems a bit overboard. Plus they seem to have a lot riding on the Ball family and you don't bite the hand that feeds you.
Overboard? They embarrassed the university on an international stage. The president of the United States got involved for crying out loud. Expelling them should be a given.
My line of thinking is that if they wouldn't be expelled for trying to steal something in LA or some other US city, they shouldn't be expelled for trying to steal something overseas. Agree that the story is not a good look for the kids or the university.
I just think that the crime being committed in China does make it way worse and deserves a much stiffer punishment.
Part of why this was as big a story as it was is China's authoritarian regime that cracks down hard on their population in ways that's aren't acceptable in the West. We shouldn't be ramping up their punishment because China has a poor human rights record.
That said, they definitely did a poor job representing UCLA at an important time and they proved UCLA has some pretty dumb basketball players. Still, would we feel particularly negative if this happened in some western country without a harsh regime? I still think it comes down to China's backwards government.
As far as China's view of the United States or what this means to Sino-American relations or something, I doubt it's even a blip on the radar, no matter how much Trump may or may not try to play it up.
