And in particular Charles Bassey....the guy who was the assistant coach at St. Anthony's in SA and who ran the AAU program Yes II Success was fired last week. Word around the Texas hoops scene is that the coach is sending his players out of state.

In the Bassey case, the courts gave the assistant coach legal guardianship...so yeah they have a lot of influence especially with these international kids brought over.

Nigel Hawkins was playing with that team too. Hopefully not relevant for him.

Bassey is, like Mitchell Robinson, a one-and-done talent, whose handlers may scare off a lot of schools. Potentially more trouble than he is worth (which means Calipari will get him).

Is this guy one of those shady characters who is basically in the human trafficking business of bringing in kids from overseas to exploit them?

It might seem bizarre to bring underage immigrants to the United States to participate in an amateur sport, but it turns out there's a whole international network of scouts, coaches and agents looking to make real money by plucking rising-star basketball players from other countries and "getting in" on the player's circle of influence early on.

And aren't players with those kind of back stories often NCAA eligibility risks?

They are headed to Louisville. Their "academy" is moving there and they have made a deal for the kids to attend DeSales HS, as students but not as athletes.

Yes, and yes.

It makes me physically ill to see the shady AAU programs and academies just metastasize to different and shadier (Louisville) locales... and feed Calipari, Pitino, etc.

...while character, academic, and skill building programs like St. Anthony's in NJ under Bob Hurley Sr. go under because of lack of funds.

It's a ****** disgrace.
